I’m feeling extremely computer-nerdish after participating in the What was the first computer you used? thread. So I thought it would be fun to share what our computer specs are.
Here’s my current system, which I’m proud of because I built it myself from separate parts (really, it’s very easy) and I keep it in really good shape:
AthlonXP 2500+ (Barton core)
DFI KT400A motherboard
512 MB PC3200 RAM
GeForce4 Ti4200 overclocked to Ti4600 speed
2 30Gig IBM hard drives in RAID 0
Windows XP
And that’s all inside the linen closet to keep the cords away from the baby! Just a few cables run to the outside. On the desk is a nice 17" black LCD screen, black speakers and black wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse.
Okay, so I know it’s not the best out there, but I got a lot of bang for my buck.
I was jonesin’ for a new laptop last Christmas, but last-minute household problems derailed those plans. Still, works great for 90% of the stuff I want to do, short of burning DVDs.
Still building my new one, but it’s been functional for a month or so, and since the motherboard on my current one just mysteriously died, it’s the only thing I have now.
P4 Northwood 2.8 ghz 800 mhz fsb
Gigabyte 8knxp mobo 875 chipset, dual bios, 800 mhz fsb
512 mb DDR PC3200 (going to a gig soon)
Dualboot Windows XP professional / RH linux 9.0 Shrike
80 gig (Windows) 12 gig (linux) harddrives
Pioneer DVD burner
52 X CD burner
Lian Li aluminum case
Right now sound is onboard until I decide which soundcard and video is Nvidia 5200 until I have dough for a 9800 or 5900.

Prepare to feel sorry for me.

I do have broadband access, but there’s a lot I can’t do because my machine is so old. I can’t even get more RAM because it’s so old supply and demand has driven the price thru the roof.

I’ve had my system long enough, I’m not sure I remember all the specs anymore. Since I bought it though, I’ve upgraded or replaced most everything except the motherboard and sound card. Here goes:
Pentium 3 800MHz motherboard
384 MB RAM (I think)
64 MB GeForce2 graphics card
Sound Blaster Live sound card (maybe)
DVD reader
CD burner
wireless PCMCIA card - allows me to access the wireless router connected to the cable modem.
17" flat pannel monitor (just got this for Christmas)
Now?
Built and upgraded by myself at various times:
AMD Athlon XP 2200+
Asus A7V-333 motherboard
512MB RAM
AOpen DVD reader
LG CD/DVD writer (DVD+/- R/RW and DVD-RAM, CD-R/RW)
1 40-gig drive
1 80-gig drive
2 120-gig drives, raided through controller on motherboard
Radeon 9000 video card with 64MB
SB Live! audio card (actually one of the oldest parts of my system)
MMC reader
DV-500 video I/O card (borrowed)
on-motherboard Ethernet
AOpen case
Keyboard
Drawing tablet
Mouse, etc
WinXP and Mandrake Linux.
It’s plugged into my mixer and sound system.
Next phase: AMD 64-bit. Those video transcoding times (AVI to MPEG-2 for DVD) are a bit long.
Yes, I’m learning to make my own DVDs. Why do you ask?
Oh, rjung, I can’t let you be the only Mac user in this thread. So here I am, coming to the rescue:
600 mHz G3 iMac (Graphite enclosure)
40 GB hard drive
256 MB Ram (soon to be upgraded)
Mac OS X 10.3.2
Built-in ethernet connection
Don’t know much about the video card, and don’t need to, since I’m not a gamer.
With…
HP Photosmart 1250 printer
DSL Modem
Microsoft optical mouse (two buttons really is better, I must admit)
15 GB 3rd generation iPod
3.08 Ghz Pentium
1Gb DDR RAM (I believe)
120 Gb, 7200 RPM drive (x’s 2)
40x CD/CD-R/CD-RW/DVD combo drive
256Mb Radeon 9800 video card
Soundblaster Audigy II audio card
Logitech 5.1 surround speakers
WinXP Pro
Logitech force-feedback stick
This is all housed in a large black case with SEVEN fans, a pop-up panel on top (with 2x USB, 1 firewire and one mic jack), four fan control knobs on the front, and a clear glass sidepanel with a blue neon light inside the case.
I just completed my new computer. I had a PIII 700 and this is what I have now:
P4 3.0gHz 800 mHz FSB
Gigabyte 8KNXP mobo
1 GB OCZ PC3200 RAM
ATI Sapphire 9600 Pro
WD Raptor 36GB SATA HD
Creative Labs Audigy ZS
Lite-On 52x Burner
Lite-On 16x DVD
Antec 480watt TruBlue Power Supply
Lian-Li PC-6085A 18 inch case
Lian-Li Optical drive bay covers
Lian-Li Side Window

Custom 4 switch baybus with Blue LED’s (3.5" Bay)
Custom 20 LED VU meter (3.5" Bay)
4 80MM Antec Blue LED fans
12" Sun Beam Cold Cathode
I love this rig!
I’m working on a Blue EL cable mod for my keyboard.
Intel P4 OC’d to 2.9 GHz on an Intel 865 PERLK mobo
1 GB RAM
120 GB HD
ATI 9600 XT video
Plextor CD-RW and DVD-RW drives
19" LCD monitor
1500 VA APC UPS
Win XP Pro
Call it the Silent Power…
Everything is black - black drives and a black aluminum Lian Li case. No lights or windows. It’s your basic “Government Black Van With No Windows” making you wonder and worry what’s going on. A couple square feet of Dynamat insie the case and a “silencer” power supply hold most ot the noise inside. The HD is mounted in a silencing sub-enclosure.
I was using an nVidia 5200 graphics card as it had no fan and was therefore entirely silent. That soon proved to be insufficient, so I found a deal on the 9600XT and will most likely replace the fan with a heatpipe. Once I do that, the PC will again be quiet enough to sleep next to, making just a light whirr of moving air without the buzzing of fans and whining/clattering of hard drives.
Celeron 400MHz, 192MB RAM, god only knows what the motherboard is, 8GB hard drive.
I know I have a SoundBlaster SomethingOrOther and a Rage video card.
CD-ROM and a CD-ROM/R/RW drive, external Zip drive, cheapest possible no-name keyboard and speakers, logitech optical mouse (given to me just yesterday by my SO, who bought himself a wireless optical mouse). 15 inch monitor.
All beige, except the Zip drive and mouse, which are both blue.
