Labdad mentioned that a few posts back.
see how I am? waited too d*** long.
Statistically, who was the greatest hitter in Major League Baseball history?
John Paciorek, of the Houston Colt .45s, who on his debut on September 29, 1963 went 3-for-3. During the off-season he hurt his back and never played another MLB game, leaving him as the player who had the most hits in a 1.000 career.
Who had the highest-ever single-season batting average?
Hugh Duffy, who hit .4397 in 1894. He played in 125 games that year and had 539 at-bats.
To those who posted the one game records. There actually is a minimum at bats or games played for the records to count.
Still makes for good trivia though.
Cecil says there are more: What are the five ways to get to first base without hitting the ball (revisited)?
Personally, I find that column extremely confusing (balk doesn’t count?), but I’ll take Cecil’s word for it.
Easy: What is the only team to win the World Series more than once, but never lose it? And what is the only team to LOSE the World Series more than once… but never win it?
The Blue Jays have won it twice (1992, 1993) but haven’t lost one. The Padres have lost it twice (1984, 1998) but have never won.
Medium: Who is the only player to win the World Series MVP Award while playing for the losing team?
Bobby Richardson won the 1960 World Series MVP; his Yankees lost 4-3 to the Pirates. That was the World Series that ended on Bill Mazeroski’s home run.
Hard: Who once struck out 21 men in a major league game? Yes, it’s been done.
Tom Cheney of the Washington Senators mowed down 21 Orioles in a 16-inning performance on Sept 12, 1962.

I use AOL most of the time, dantheman. I have not the foggiest idea where AOL has a “spoiler” option. (Then again, you may mean just click the black box in anyone’s post; I’ll do that the next time I log onto the SDMB.)
OK, I see what you mean. ( on me)
Prior to 2001, what was the last World Series championship team to have a player who hit more than 35 HRs that season and who was it?
(This was much better question before the 2001 World Series, obviously)
The 1985 Kansas City Royals. Steve Ballboni had 36 that year. Hard to believe, eh? I won a bunch of money off that question over the years…damn you Luis Gonzalez!
- What Hall of Famer hit a home run in his first major league at-bat, and never hit another?
Hint: he was ALSO the answer to another great trivia question that 6 Astros screwed up forver, a few weeks back.
I still don’t know how to do spoilers, so the answer is down below:
Hoyt Wilhelm (he also USED to be the answer to the question "Who was the last pitcher to no-hit the Yankees.)
astro: Even more amazing, Hoyt his a triple in his second at-bat…and he never hit another triple in his career, either!
How many MLB games have I personally attended?
One.
Did I enjoy it?
It wasn’t bad.
Did I, as a journalist, enjoy free admission?
Yes.
How about some free food?
That, too!
This always used to be my favorite question. I’m not sure if it’s still true - it was true in the 1970s:
What pitcher had the best winning percentage against the NY Yankees?
Babe Ruth
What was the original name of the New York Yankees?
The Baltimore Orioles. (Before they became the NY Highlanders)
And, what was the original name of the Baltimore Orioles?
The Milwaukee Brewers. (Before they became the St. Louis Browns)
That was a great question- I remember that, in the late 80s or early 90s, Teddy Higuera of the Brewers was close to breaking that record… but I don’t know if he ever did.
Another perennial favorite:
Who collected the most World Series checks in his career (this could be as a player, a coach, or a manager)?
Frankie Crosetti, who was the Yankees shortstop in the 1930s and early 40s, and then worked as their 3rd base coach until 1964)
Hey Mullinator, the first night game at Wrigley was really August 9th. The game on the 8th against the Phillies only lasted a few innings before being called on account of the rain (I know, I was there!). So, really, the first official game was on the 9th. (8/9/88)
Everything about Cubs is cursed.
My favorite has always been Who’s on First?
Who was the last player to start in right field for the Yankees before the obtained Babe Ruth?
George Halas, who stuck exclusively to football after that.
What MVPs were born on the same day?
Jeff Bagwell and Frank Thomas, MVPs in 1994 were both born on May 27, 1968
I remember that game too, being a Phillies fan, and 8/8/88 being a significant day for me (it was my 15th birthday!) Forgot the part about it being rained out.
