What's your favorite nut?

Filberts are boys and hazelnuts are girls.

Brazil nuts are my favorite. Have been since I was really little and used to pick them out of the mixed nuts. I know about their un-PC name because one time when I was little, my grandmother told me how they used to call them that, but I shouldn’t.

So, fix the damn thing!
What are Mods for, anyway, besides beating me at Scrabble ™ and taking my lunch money?

Macadamia

You have just made my day!

Tough, tough choice, but cashew won out.
I adore macadamians, but when I eat too many their taste changes for me, somehow.
Brazil nuts <yep, heard them called…monkey nuts <coughs>…growing up, by my folks, who are not racist but my dad was raised in Chicago and everyone was their own species, never mind race. Poles fought Italians fought Germans fought Slavs fought Irish…fuggedabout it! He hasn’t called them that in many decades, but I’m pretty sure he didn’t mean it personally when he did.

ANyway, brazil nuts, cashews, filberts and cashews fought it out, and the deliciously fatty cashew wins.

Isn’t that a prehistoric fish?

My co-worker told me, and now I can’t ever forget it, no matter how hard I try.

roasted, pecans (my vote)

raw, walnuts

chopped/shaved for topping food, almonds

although now I want to try what I haven’t had on this list!

It depends on a host of factors, but for plain old straight-up eating, cashew is the nut I want most of the time. (The other times I would go for walnuts, pistachios, and possibly pecans.)

Charlie Sheen

Hazelnut. No hazelnut, no Nutella.

Let’s not beat around the bush: They used to be called “nigger toes”. We never used that term when I was growing up, but my mom says that they did when she and her siblings were kids (in the 1940s or 50s). She said that she was an adult before she ever actually stopped to think about the name (whereupon she stopped using it).

To the poll, I said pistachios, but cashews are a definite second place.

It’s a matter of context.

In mixed nuts, cashew is king.

If you’re just eating a single type of nuts, let it be a bag of pistacios.

If you’re baking a pie, then pecans, naturally.

If you’re making turkey stuffing, pasta sauce or beef stew, chestnuts are a key component.

If you want to poison someone, use almonds.

I adore macadamia nuts but with the expense and fat content they rarely find their way into my snack rotation :frowning: I like pretty much all nuts though I am not fond of peanuts [even though they are legumes and not nuts…] though about once a year I get a craving for a PBJ sandwich for some absolutely unknown reason. Cashews are my second least favorite nut. I like almonds and hazelnuts as nuts, ground as flour for cooking, almond milk, almond flavoring and hazelnuts as flavoring or in nutella.

I really would love to own a nut butter maker so I could make my own almond paste, storebought marzipan is so damned expensive, and way too sweet.

I came in here just to say that.

Actually it’s the right one though, but I was going to say the left one because it’s less ambigous.

Here’s a summary after 66 votes (already out-of-date) that may be a little easier to read:

Unless there’s a persuasive difference between Hazelnuts and Filberts, those votes could be combined as far as I’m concerned, making them third high.
