Once again, I call on my fellow Dopers to help me out. I’m going to NYC on December 11 and will stay 3 nights. We’re seeking help in locating a reasonably priced hotel somewhere in mid-town or lower that is near a subway station. In past trips to NYC, I’ve stayed at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. This time, I’m on somewhat of a budget.
Can anyone suggest a moderately priced hotel? I don’t care if it’s small, I just care that it’s clean.
I like the Cosmopolitan (Chambers and West Broadway in Tribeca.) Nothing fancy, but clean and centrally located - and much cheaper than any place else I found. See http://www.cosmohotel.com/
I stayed at the Radisson Lexington once in midtown. If you take one of their “petite” rooms, it’s can be quite reasonable. Accomodations were fine and you can’t beat the location.
You can find a great deal on hotwire.com . You won’t know the name of the hotel or the exact location until you actually reserve the room, but you will know the neighborhood and star rating. They often have hotels at 1/2 rate or less.
I stayed at Howard Johnson’s Plaza on 8th street this past September. Rooms were clean. Rates were very reasonable - under $140 except for Saturday but I booked early. I think it’s located around 51st and the subway entrance is on 48th.
They also have a parking garage which runs around $24 a day.
Hotel Pennsylvania on 7th Ave across from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. Rooms are small but it’s NY ya know, but they were very clean and the staff was friendly. I liked it because we were located almost directly between Central Park and the Financial District.
It’s a three star and we had five people and two beds. We were there for three nights and I think it was something like $85 each for the whole stay.
Heheh, yeah, as a smoker I don’t always notice the rancid stench of cigarettes and I’ve seen homeless folks with larger cardboard boxes than that room (we had five of us in it) but we only slept there. We got up at dawn and roamed the city until midnight or later every night.
Is anyplace in Manhattan not near a subway station?
You could try the Washington Square Hotel. I haven’t been there but it looks OK on the Internet. There seem to be scads of decent-appearing, three star hotels that come up when you use the online travel services.
I am planning a trip to NYC probably in the spring, so I hope you’ll come back to this thread and let us know where you stayed and how it was. Or you can email me if you want.
I’ve actually seen this one listed with only two stars, or maybe it was only one, on the online services.
But for fans of 1930s swing music this place is a holy of holies, being the place referred to in the song Pensylvania 6-5000. And that actually is still their number.
