What's Your Favorite Word You Rarely Get To Use?

That is indeed one application of the term. If I ever get filthy stinkin’ rich I’m gonna hire me a full time fluffer. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m trying to think of a situation where I would WANT to use the word defenestrate. Do you people make a habit of throwing your shit out the window? If you do, I’m usually in the car right next to you calling you a litterbug and giving you the stank eye.

Reminds me of craptacular.

My fave is caterwaul. I’m surprised at the number of people who’ve never heard the phrase. I’m currently in physical therapy from a bad car accident and I told the PT gal with her finger in the middle of my sore muscle that I was going to start caterwauling if she didn’t quit. She thought I was nuts.

“The fluffer ended up defenestrating the male lead, throwing the production into chaos.”

Collusion. Just sounds pretty. Also, opulence and lucidity. I like the ‘oo’ sound a lot.

My all-time favorite, though, is flibbertigibbet, which I first heard in ‘Joe vs the Volcano’. It’s a real word, though, and really not that hard to work into conversations. I have found that it’s very easy for people who don’t know the word to figure it out from the context.

So many good word here. I like dilettante.

pudenda.

Another another discussion board, a long long time, there was a guy whose alias was Harry Pudenda. I chatted with him a lot, before he told me to look it up.

I thought of the word “insouciance” for some reason today, which prompted me to look up this old thread. I realize that in my dark humor, I didn’t post my favorite word that actually fits the spirit of the thread: “palimpsest”. I learned it, along with the wonderful word “numinous”, in Carl Sagan’s novel Contact.

In this case, of course, the most appropriate word (which I either learned from a poster’s name here or from Girl Genius, I don’t remember) is probably “revenant.”
