What's your local Ice Cream Parlor?

We had a new Farrell’s open across the street from Knott’s Berry Farm in February.

And about four weeks ago, an old man in an SUV put it into “Drive” instead of “Reverse,” ran into a group of people waiting to get in, and killed an old woman.

When I was in college back in the Dark Ages (1975-79), the Universities Ag College ran an on-campus dairy bar. Their chocolate ice cream was the richest I have ever had. Friendly’s Triple Chocolate is about as close as anyone has ever come, but nowhere near.

The dairy bar is gone now, a victim of changing priorities as the university de-emphasized the agricultural program.

Which is kind of stupid, given that one or two other locations stayed open and in business until at least the 1980s.

But memories did keep some of us from patronizing them.

Honey Hut is awesome. There was an East Coast in Stow, but it didn’t last. :frowning: Handel’s is good, but Katie’s Korner in Kent is better. And the place in New Baltimore (don’t know the name) will change your religion.

Still there in the same location. And still great.

Applegate is awesome. I’ll also give a shout out to nearby Holsten’s, where the final scene of the Sopranos was fil

A plane crash? How does Farrell’s get the blame for that?

Our local place, Bauder Pharmacy. A real soda fountain with the best ice cream. The absolute best is the Bauder Peppermint bar, but you can only get those for 10 days a year at the State Fair.

This report puts it in better context. The shop was located just outside the perimeter of a secondary airport (once Sacramento’s primary, then and now used for freight and private aircraft) and right under a runway path. A badly-restored F86 failed to reach takeoff speed, bounced over the protective levee and hit the ice cream shop on a Saturday afternoon, killing 22 people, most of them children.

As other Farrell’s locations stayed open for a decade or more, I am not sure why there would be an objection to a new one forty years on, but it was a terrible, unnecessary event and there are those of us who think of it first when the word “Farrell’s” is mentioned.

I don’t think anyone blames Farrell’s for the crash at all. It’s more that after decades of having no Farrell’s in the area, the first thing people (who lived here then) think of when you say “Farrell’s” is the crash. Then a couple of years ago when they proposed opening one in town again, it was just after the 40th anniversary of the crash and people were talking about the crash and how re-opening a Farrell’s here in town would be re-opening old wounds. I did not live here at the time, and I was only 3, so I didn’t object to the new Farrell’s but I know there was a lot of talk and strong opinions.

Swensen’s is our go-to place in Thailand for ice cream. But back in Honolulu, there was a fantastic local place called Bubbies. Best ever.

WOW!
I just browsed those.
Amazing misplacement of culpability there!
The objectors seem to be blaming Farrell’s, not the air show organizers who let a man enter the show without enough experience with the plane he was flying.

Swensons was in La Mesa for a while when I grew up. Aren’t they out of San Francisco?
I seem to remember a Cable Car sundae.
–G?!?

This.

It’s not a case of blaming Farrell’s, but I think anyone wanting to put up twin office towers called a “World Trade Center” would run into similar opposition for similar reasons.

RealityChuck, was that in Schenectady? If so, did you ever make it out to the Tollgate, in Delmar? They’ve been in business since the 1940s if not longer.

Anyway, out here in Lawrence, Kansas our local ice cream shop is called Sylas & Maddy’s.

I’ve lived in the Columbus, Ohio area for the past 6 years. Here it’s Jenni’s or Grater’s, I guess. There used to be a Handel’s stand down the road, which I liked, but they closed shortly after I moved to this area. Now an NFL player runs a drive-through (which I’d never seen/heard of before I moved here) in that shopping center and I think that place is a generic pizza shop.

Where I lived most of my life it was probably a place called “Dumser’s” but I never really went there.

There’s a store near Lincoln and Devon.

When is Austin, if you want ice cream, you got to Amy’s. That is all there is too it. There is one in the airport if you are just passing through.

Ahh! Graters!
I thought it was GraEters (?)
I remember them from Clifton neighborhood outside the U. of Cincinnati around 1998.
Their offerings reminded me of ColdStone which I came to San Diego in the mid-1990’s I think.
And ColdStone’s stuff reminded me of Steve’s, which I learned about in Denver in the mid-1980’s. I think they originated in Boston (?) Anyway, the Mix-Ins seemed to be Steve’s innovation; ColdStone’s innovation was the chilled granite mixing surface.

All three are good stuff – but a little different from the traditional sundae, no?
–G!

Well, the last time I was in Lodi (the one in the song… California), there was a place called Fluffy’s Ice Cream and Chinese Food. A few months before final escape, they put up a subsidiary sign: NOW SERVING WAFFLES!

So. “Now serving waffles” has become a staple family in-joke.

Margie’s is a north side treasure (and I’m within walking distance so the dicey parking is a bit offset – the lines on a hot day, however, are not).

Rainbow Cone on the south side is absolutely worth the drive at least once a summer. Big, satisfying, unique, and charmingly old-timey. Their titular cone combines a bunch of mini-scoops of different ice creams.

I’ve been told there’s a fantastic custard shop in the Lincoln Park area, but I have yet to find it (or commit the name to memory).

Where I grew up (Dekalb, IL), the gem is a frozen custard stand called Ollie’s. Absolutely amazing. Great flavors, a big menu with a few unique treats for just about any taste, and always a long line of happy people waiting for the best treat in the county. The moved to a different location something like 15 years ago (technically in Sycamore, IL now), but the charm is still there.

Amy’s is good, but Nothing Strikes Back! was better.
