Shoes don’t really count. Jackets and coats, for that matter can also last throughout the decades too. (You can still include them here if you wish).
What article of clothing do you still have -and wear- that you just can’t bring yourself to do away with?
I have two tee-shirts that were given to me ohh… some time in the late 80’s. One is a Pink Floyd concert T-shirt and the other, made from the same material, (polyester I think) was also given to me from one of my college roommates. Neither was new when I got them and there actually was a time when I could wear the shirts in public. That time has long since passed.
I use the two as night shirts; they are skin-tight but I can barely feel them on my body. I wear them at least once a week and though hole-ridden, they still make up a cherished part of my meager wardrobe.
I have a UC Berkeley sweatshirt I got in 6th grade (1989). It was too big for me then, but I loved it anyway. I grew into it, and now it’s too big again – not because I’ve gotten smaller (I wish!) but because it’s so old it’s all stretched out. But I wear it when I’m upset or sick, and it’s so nice and soft! I want another one just like it was when it was new, but of course I can’t find one.
I’d have to go with a simple Nike baseball cap that I’ve had since way before that got big … about 7 or 8 year now. I believe there may be others, but … I can’t remember most.
But my husband and kids are going to a wedding reception in a few weeks, and MIL mentioned pulling out a boy’s suit from the storage cupboard. It turns out the suit was worn by my husband for some event 20 years ago! And even then, it wasn’t new, it was a hand-me-down. MIL says it must be about 26 years old.
Anyway, she decided that making my son wear that suit would be the ultimate in being cheap, so she went out and bought him a new one.
But I have many baby clothes and assorted items which were used by my husband when he was a baby. And I have worn kimonos of my MILs which are about 20 or 30 years old.
I got a leather bomber jacket that I got for Christmas in 1989 or 1990 that is still my primary winter coat. It looks like it is 13 years old too. I still wear a flannel that I got for my birthday in May 1994. Its missing a few buttons but it is VERY comfortable. I also have a Marlboro shirt that I wear every couple of weeks in the winter time that I got in the summer/fall of 1994. All of those are many years older than any pair of shoes I own that I wear regularly. I DO have a pair of cleats that I bought myself on my 16th birthday but I rarely wear those anymore. I also have a few flannels that I got in Jr High, but I never wear those.
On preview, Tsubaki made me think of something else. I got a picture taken of me in a little blue suit when I was ~6 months old back in the fall of '73. Both have my sons have worn the suit. Sadly, I only have a picture of the youngest son actually wearing it.
My dad gave me PFD shirt when I was little that he had already had for years. It only got to bad to wear about 12 years ago when he still had it , but i love those soft old shirts , Dont you?
Well, I collect (and wear) vintage clothing, and some of that is quite old, but I don’t think it counts for this question. So, let me see - I have a Military Police shirt from an old boyfriend that I still wear from time to time, and I’d guess it’s about 20 years old.
My first Grateful Dead t-shirt. I bought it around 1981. It’s very thin now, holes here and there, and a bit tight. I don’t wear it to fine dining establishments, but can’t throw that out.
I have a light blue and green jacket that belonged to my husband. It’s been 24 years since I even had a husband.
I wear it this time of year, when it’s too cool to go without and not cold enough for my bulky black sweater. In other words, about a month in the fall and a month in the spring. Which is why it has lasted.
Well i’m only 16, so anything from the 80’s is very hard for me to wear.
I do, however, still wear shirts from four-five years ago - not bad considering I was 12 when I bought them…
amazingly they fit just enough to tuck into my shorts and fit perfectly with the width (I’m still about as skinny as I was at 12!)
… only if I grow another inch in height I will expose my navel and I’ll have to give them away. sigh
I have a US Navy ‘Gonzo Patrol’ T-shirt that seems to date from the late 1970s, but I bought it second-hand so I doubt it counts. If we’re talking about clothes that we’ve owned the entire time, I have a shirt that I bought in about 1991 that I can’t get rid of. It’s never needed ironing or repairs, still looks good (despite having been worn in Darwin in December and climbing King’s Canyon in Australian January heat) and was only a tenner at the time.
I have a pair of Jump Boots that I bought in 9th grade (1988) that I still wear several times a month. I’ve had them re-soled twice, so I dunno if that counts or not. Also, I’ve cut them down to ankle boots. So while they don’t look anything like they did when I bought them, I have been wearing them for 14 + years now.
a basketball jersey/ tank top from my Grade 4 basketball team…still fits, although it’s a bit stretched and tighter in uh, some areas…nonetheless, I still wear it in public occasionally
My son has a black t-shirt with an immense moose on it, from Vancouver. It was given to him 8 years ago, and it went from a sleeping nightshirt to a loosey t shirt to a tight shirt.
I took a photo of it recently, so we can document this much loved article before he outgrows it totally !!!
I still have my Jr. High School Letter Jacket from Choir. Sometimes I put it on, and sing Broadway Show Tunes.
That’s right, Choir. Wanna make something of it, bub?
