Unless you are Cary Grant, the real one, eschew plaid suits.
It’s a little overstated.
I might wear a sport jacket with that pattern, but I don’t think I could pull off plaid pants.
Some guys could, though.
As far as the cloth pattern is concerned, I’d wear it. But I prefer Hawaiian shirts. As far as the slim cut is concerned, I’m not interested. I prefer a cut that allows a person to do more than stand still hoping that someone will take their picture. ( Ya never know when a fight might break out.
)
And I would never wear brown shoes with a blue suit. The visual is hard on the eyes, and draws the eye away from the suit. Blue suit with black shoes are OK. Blue with blue are OK. Blue with white are OK. Blue suits with brown shoes looks like you dressed yourself in the dark. IMHO, of course.
The last suit I ever wore was to a residency interview back in the mists of time (it was an inexpensive foreign import, and it hung in my closet for some years before mercifully being released to Goodwill or somesuch).
Seeing that plaid number reminded me of the New Yorker cartoon showing an executive who’d been in an auto accident lying in the street, protesting to the ambulance workers trying to attend to his wounds: “Hey! That’s Brooks Brothers you’re cutting up!”
I think it looks nice BUT it would not be what I would buy for my son. That is to say, I wouldn’t look down on a guy wearing it. But I wouldn’t pick it or recommend it.
Now if my son was buying it for himself, no problem. Actually, for some reason I believe that’s true of three out of four of my sons, but not for the other one because … I don’t know.*
My sons all work in new-tech business casual companies, so it’s not like they need a variety of suits, and this suit is for someone with a variety of suits, is what I think.
*ETA I think I figured it out, it’s because unlike his brothers’ his hair is still red. Does that clear things up?
I think it is beautiful and he is the right size for it. I wouldn’t mind having one if you want to throw an extra one my way. Then again, I subscribe to GQ.
Most men don’t pay that much attention to suits in general because most of them are so generic. You might as well go for a conservative but distinct one. That one fits the bill. Brook Brothers doesn’t carry tacky suits or clothes. Anything you get there is well thought out and designed to impress.
I notice that the page says they don’t have any available in the desired quantity (1, for those of you playing at home), so does it matter?
Also, no, I wouldn’t wear it. But that’s just me. I don’t wear suits.
You avoided the most important opinion. Would your son want and wear it? I saw it as a young person’s fashion but what do I know. I don’t own a suit coat.
Looks fine. Yes, it’s different from what people wore thirty years ago. It isn’t thirty years ago, especially not in New York.
In an amazing coincidence I just saw a hockey commentator wearing essentially the exact same suit.
It looked fine. I took a picture of the TV, and am trying to figure out how to share it to Imagur, or whatever it’s called.
The resolution isn’t good, but check this out. It’s the same suit.
The suit is fine but istm that clothes from mom should just be functional and let your son choose his more fashionable outfits himself. I’d just get him a dark suit so it’s a little less obvious to his coworkers how many suits he has. No doubts if you wear that to work two days in a row.
I like it quite a bit as well. Were I younger and, er, a little trimmer, I’d go for it myself. That said, I work in the creative business and things tend to be less conservative all around. And I have also been getting less conservative as I get older, which seems bassackward as I just feel like I look like a dumpling these days.
Anything trendy is going to go out of fashion, too. I’d stick with solids or a very delicate stripe, for now. I agree with others that the pants could be a bit clownish.
I have more of a problem with the cut than the pattern. I can’t wait for this suits-that-look-too-small fad to go away.
He’s a bloke. Nobody gives a damn if he wears the same suit two days in a row. Most likely nobody will even notice. Nobody cares how many suits he owns.
It’s one of the many provileges of masculinity.
I’m 38 and I think the suit looks pretty nice. I say go for it. Especially since you got him a more conservative one already. There are too many boring black suits out in the world already. The blue plaid one is a great look.

Well, my son finally got back to me 6 hours after I texted him saying to get it if it was the only one available, but if there was a plainer suit he’d prefer it. By that time it was sold out anyway and there were enough negative responses and posts to give me pause about ordering. He was pleased with the gray suit; I agree that color-wise it’s a bit on the light side but a review said that in person it actually looks darker.
His taste is generally subdued but recently he bought himself a bright orange shirt and a windbreaker with a striking graphic print so it seems that his tolerance for attention-getting clothes is increasing.
Apparently Brooks Bros does a big suit sale a couple of times a year so I’ll look out for the next one.
Leaffan, amazing coincidence! It does look like the same suit!
Bayaker, I’d forgotten how cute Tatum O’Neill was as a kid.
This is great advice. Tastes vary a lot when it comes to suits - ask before you buy.
