I like any kind of lettuce, although I prefer crunchy to chewy-leafy. Bacon, tomato, sweet peppers, feta or blue cheese, cranberries. Sunflower seeds are nice, too. Then ranch or a blend of ranch and Italian. Oh! Good summer tomatoes if available.
How about you? I’m in a salad sort of mood…
Classic and pared-down: lettuce, tomato, cucumber and celery. Just lemon or lime juice, no other dressing.
And no croutons or cheese or meat or fowl or jujubes or buttons or any of that other nonsense that has no business anywhere near a salad.
I like to add shaved Parmesan cheese, dried pomegranate and mandarin orange slices. I’ve been enjoying Catalina dressing lately. It’s a nice change.
Lettuce, tomato, chicken, bacon bits and cheese. Croutons, too, if I feel like it.
So…basically a club sandwich with salad dressing (either Cesar or Italian, by preferance), instead of butter and mayo.
Mix of romaine and iceberg lettuce topped with feta cheese, chopped green olive, sesame seeds and cherry tomato. Light touch of a spicy vinaigrette please.
No croutons! No cucumber! No lawn trimmings!
Lettuce, some tomato, some diced ham and/or turkey, slices of hard-boiled egg, some red onion, a couple of pepperoncini, and ideally Sizzlers hot bacon dressing, which has been banned since the 80s. Otherwise Thousand Island or maybe a spicy French dressing.

Cobb, with blue cheese dressing.
Mine always looks awful, and after all that work making it. I’d rather buy the pretty pre-packaged deli salads with the works and pay the $6.
I like the Trader Joes Herb/Lettuce mix. Feta cheese, craisins!, balsalmic, sunflower seeds, good tomatoes. I do like meaty salads, chicken or grilled shrimp goes good with the above. Actually, I’ve met few salads or salad ingredients I don’t like. Happiness is a good salad bar with artichoke hearts, hearts of palm, fresh peas!, etc.
Lettuce - I prefer Olivia’s Spring Mix with herbs, but if I am doing a single lettuce it’s green leaf or romaine.
Tomato, cucumber, red bell pepper, scallions.
Dried cherries, and nuts of some sort, preferably sliced almonds, pistachios or walnuts.
A little ranch or caesar dressing.
Crusty roll.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Classic? Lettuce, cherry tomatos, green onions, cucumber slices and cubes of carrot with homemade Ranch dressing with lots of buttermilk.
Fancy? Fennel, prosciutto, pomegranate seeds, feta cheese and homemade honey mustard dressing.
Shredded gem or Romaine lettuce, cucumber cut to julienne, or quarter slices, strips of red pepper. Tomatoes sliced with torn basil in a separate dish. Dressing in a jug to be added as an option per diner.
No white or gooey dressings…,
If I’m in the mood for something simple…
Spinach leaves, cherry tomatoes, bit of parmesan or mozzarella, and a teeny bit of caesar dressing or maybe ranch if I only have that around. Sometimes I’ll add a bit of bacon or maybe hardboiled egg to that, but that’s rare. If I’m in the mood for this one, I’ll eat it for days.
If I’m in the mood for a big salad as a meal…
Either mixed lettuce or these little gem lettuces I like to get, cucumber, mushrooms, bell pepper, hardboiled egg, cheddar, and whatever meat I have around like chicken or ham, topped with a bit of ranch or caesar dressing again. I also like either pineapple or cherry tomatoes but not both together, so it depends on whatever I’m in the mood for that day. If I’m really feeling fancy, I’ll add some kidney beans and maybe some sunflower seeds, but I don’t usually bother with that if I’m fixing it all at home.
And now that I’ve typed this all up, I think I know what I might be having for dinner tomorrow.
We eat a ton of salad in spring. It tends to be:
-Mixed greens from garden
-Toasted pecans or walnuts (always)
-Cucumber, tomato, oriental peas, etc. as in season
-Carrot rounds
-Sometimes shaved parmesan
-Balsamic-based dressing
We toss the salad in tupperware with the dressing, rather than pouring it on each serving.
I’ve been buying bags of washed baby spinach for salads lately, because it keeps longer than lettuce in the fridge . A few tomatoes, crumbled feta cheese and Newman’s Own Lite Balsamic dressing and I’m good to go, salad-wise.
Modified Caesar:
Chop up romaine and iceberg lettuce, chinese (Napa) cabbage optional, add shaved red cabbage for crunch, add Parmesan or other shredded, sharp cheese, and toss. Then toss with pepper and Italian dressing (Good Seasons made fresh is good). Top off with grilled chicken and/or ham strips.
Don’t forget to serve with white wine. It’s a meal!
Steak salad–which we just had for dinner
Mixed greens
sliced celery
sauteed mushrooms
sauteed onions
sauteed red and orange peppers
medium rare steak sliced grilled on the Big Green Egg
balsamic vinegar dressing
MacTarnahans Amber Ale to drink
It was awesome.
Although I’m a sucker for a good Caesar, my salad bar choices lean towards:
Romaine, red onions, bell peppers, boiled eggs, bacon, sunflower seeds or pecans, cranberries or raisins, shredded parmesan or asiago cheeses, honey mustard dressing. Sort of a sandwich without the bread. Or, if the croutons look good and fresh, sort of a deconstructed sandwich.
