What's your take on "domains by proxy"?

Domains by proxy is a way of registering a domain name so that when someone runs a “whois” they can’t find out about you.

They say that it’s so that spammers can’t find you and your contact information.

But, it also seems like a useful front for sham businesses.

What’s the general opinion on doing that? Anyone?

I use Domains By Proxy with several web sites. Using DbP has everything to do with reducing spam and junk mail, and reducing identity theft, than giving the appearance of a sham site. YMMV.

My company’s does that.
Originally, the website was registered to the consultant that set it up.
But then they changed to a cheaper service and it was put into our info.
The junk emails and then junk real mails and junk phone calls and junk faxes started pouring in.

For a while they switched to using erroneous address and phone numbers, which solved the problem, but someone said we might get into trouble if someone legit needed to contact us and couldn’t. Someone disputing our use of a copyrighted image, for example.

So the proxie thing is a godsend. Keeps out the junk and allows in the legit.
