For those of you not aware, the Whatsit Family is expecting its third (and final, no really) addition, due at the end of May. This is of course a joyous event, etc. and so forth, but since I am a type 2 diabetic, it’s a little more fraught with peril than a regular pregnancy, since diabetes puts you at higher risk for certain types of birth defects, particularly involving the neural tube and the heart.
Anyway, the level II ultrasound a few weeks ago did not reveal any markers for defects in the neural tube, and then we passed today’s fetal EKG with flying colors as well. Now all I have to do is make sure that my blood sugar is as close to normal as possible every minute of every day from here until the end of the pregnancy so that FetalWhatsit doesn’t get huge and fat and develop breathing problems and neonatal hypoglycemia and so forth. No big deal, compared to growing a healthy heart!
We are all pretty relieved and happy over here and I just thought I’d share.
Congratulations! I had to have that done with both my boys because I have lupus. Then, when my second was born, the hospital wanted to give my little day-old baby an EKG (as their standard procedure for babies with mothers with lupus…). The resident who did it came to our bedside and said he’d never done it for a child, much less a tiny (6 lb) baby. Poor guy. He looked very nervous handling a little baby.
Did you get to watch the screen? They gave us a video of my first son’s which was very cool.
No video, but I did get to watch the screen, which was pretty cool. It’s amazing, the level of detail they can get on an ultrasound machine these days. I didn’t get any pictures, but we have plenty o’ pictures from the Level II ultrasound from a couple of weeks ago, including a great shot of Young Whatsit’s developing testes. That one is definitely coming out on some future Prom Night, trust me.
