What've you splashed out on recently?

A plasma tv, tv cabinet, two new sofas, a rug, a floor lamp, and timber venetians through the front end of the house. This has been a rather costly week

Yesterday I finally bought myself a kayak!

I’d been researching/searching for about a year and a half, decided on the two I thought would be best (needed to be decent both in flat and open ocean water, and light enough to carry, and affordable), and last Wednesday, while playing hooky, saw a last year model of the exact one I was looking for - even the right colors - at the rental place - ON SALE! SCORE!

So yesterday I went back and got it. $800 later, I’m a kayak owner. It’s this one in the red/yellow fade.

As it was raining here all weekend, I haven’t actually had it in the water yet. It’s still on the roof of my car because I hope to get down to the river this afternoon.

Titleist 983K driver and a box of ProV1’s (which cost more?). Went right out and shot 81 on my first 18 of the year. After broken ribs cut my season short last year, I am going all out this time.

Plus, I got my daughter an iPod for her 13th birthday. Blue mini. I am jealous now.

Upgrading my computer cost me $200 more than I had budgeted for :frowning:

I also helped subsidize an unemployed friend’s move to Ottawa.

This is the one that impresses me most in this thread.

Let’s see…

A Trail-A-Bike so my son and I can bike this summer

A bike rack so we can get our bikes to the bike trail

Two pairs of sandals, ($192, I do not wear cheap shoes!)

Also I bought out my friend’s share of the Quarter Horse colt we bought together last fall, so now he’s mine! All mine!!!. I’m really excited about this because since my mare died a couple months ago I have’t had any horse I could really call “my own.”

My wife and i got a DVD player as a gift recently. On setting it up, we discovered that our crappy old 19" TV didn’t have proper input sockets, and only had an aerial socket which would require an RF modulator to hook up the DVD player.

So we bit the bullet and got a new TV, a 27" Panasonic stereo TV, which we’re very happy with. Of course, it would be nice to be able to afford a big flat-screen or plasma TV, but we’re both grad students so a more extravagant set-up will have to wait a few years. Anyway, the 27" set is heaps bigger than the old 19" set, and is plenty big enough and good enough for our loungeroom.

On the same day, we took an antique chair of hers in to be repaired. The repairs are going to cost around $300, which is probably more than the chair itself is worth, but she’s had it for a long time and has a sentimental attachment to it, so it’s worth doing.

And right now, i’m in the throes of trying to decide what new computer to buy. My current one is getting on, and is starting to give me trouble, so it’s time to get a replacement. If you’re a computer person, and want to weigh in with some advice, you can check out my computer buying thread.

I just finished putting the golf set of my dreams together with custom fit 3 thru S Big Bertha irons, Cobra and KZG woods and a dern spiffy bag with individual club slots and even a degum cooler that’ll hold 3 or 4 “beverages”.

Next item on radar is an HD big screen to go with our recent H.E. upgrade, but this decision is taking a bit of time based on the wide number of choices and the pace of technological advances.

Cross your fingers for us, but in about seven hours I’ll know whether we’ve just bought a PT Cruiser! My wife will arrive in the driveway tonight in something that isn’t the same car she drove away in last week.

: preparing to do the happy dance :

For me, next week I’m going to splurge on an audio interface for my computer, which allows me to plug instruments and microphones and even a turntable directly into it, and the output goes to the sound card. This will allow me to make my own multitrack recordings in Adobe Audition, for which I splurged yesterday.

Just make sure they’ve fixed the power steering hose problem.

/whisper $100 worth of undyed lapis beads. Don’t tell anybody, 'cause I’m not supposed to buy any more beads until I sell some jewellery… /whisper

I believe I am undergoing a crash quit-smoking campaign as I try to cover up this one. No new books this paycheck either.

And yes, that hundred bucks does translate into more than ten beads. But not that much more. Would somebody please tell the Afghanis to quit shooting at everyone and growing heroin poppies, and get back to mining lapis? Honestly, these people!.. I’m getting darn tired of these petty little insurrections* and ‘unrest’ interfering with me getting the stuff I want, at a price I consider reasonable.

(As a total aside, given the price of quality lapis lazuli lately, it would be almost as profitable as heroin, and you would potentially be hangin’ with a MUCH better class of people. I’d take miners over smack dealers any day. Lot more work, though.)

*I sincerely hope that the lack of smilies doesn’t mean people will take the “petty little insurrection” part in any way seriously. Too much of that 'round hereabouts lately.

I’ve got my eye on the Hellsing boxset… and a lot of manga…

Most recent purchase bigger than pocket change? Groceries.

But… most recent, really big purchase? A 17’ hard-side RV. (pull-trailer)

We got really tired of living in a tent during Faire last year. And, when we looked at how between site build, Faire itself and teardown, we’d be there for nearly three months, it seemed well-worth dropping seven large on a very gently used 1998 model. Nice deal - it comes with an awning, a 12/120 volt electrical system that I haven’t fully comprehended yet, a propane-powered fridge, central heat and a bathroom with toilet and shower. We’ll probably be able to sell hot showers for $20 each, since the Faire shower trailer runs out of lukewarm water at about 7:15 PM and never recovers until the next day.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. But we don’t have to worry about it now. I just spoke with the missus, and we couldn’t afford the upgrade to an automatic transmission for the PT. So instead we’ve splurged on a 2004 Dodge Neon. Hooray, our first new car!

I’m not supposed to be buying anymore beads either…oh, my precious sodalite, my beautifyl undyed mother-of-pearl…my Czech glass beads with their bright colors and clear quality…precioussssss…

Oh, and besides the beads…a PDA and some software.

The Sharpe 14 DVD box set. Woo, 14 Hours of Napoleonic war goodness.

I recently bought me a BurgundyGlo Rickenbacker 330. It’s just soooo sweeet…

…and next summer to really splurge, you can trade up to a tandem!

Speaking of biking, I just bought the 2004 model Burley Solo I was lusting after (on sale!). Top-of-the-line, drool-worthy. Now ValleyGirl just needs to grow a bit, and it’ll go on back of the tandem.

I have a secret longing for a Graco Pack N Play Sport to take to the beach, camping, and soccer games. In fact, I asked for it for my birthday. Am I nuts?

Do you mean a tandem bike or tandem Trail-A-Bike? Either way I think (hope) we’re set with this one for a couple years. The Trail-A-Bike goes up to 80lbs and he’s only 48lbs now. Also, since he’s an only child, no need for the double trailer.
