I seriously doubt GRRM is doing it for the money – based on various purchases and business ventures he blogs about, he seems to have literally more money than he knows what to do with. I think he just had the literary equivalent of eyes bigger than his stomach, and he’s sincerely trying to wrap it up best he can. I suspect that’s the same story for many bulging series – or it’s at least as likely as greed.
