For me, it would be Dune. Similar large-scale intrigue and political maneuverings across families and distant lands. Cool aspects to the universe that would benefit from today’s CGI and other effects. Sandworms, ornithopters, Navigators, Bene Gesserit. Swoon.
And from Jodowrosky through Lynch, through that Syfy attempt, it would finally get the treatment it deserves.
Wild Cards, a series of collaborative novels by that George R.R. Martin fellow and a few others, like Melinda Snodgrass, Roger Zelazny and Chris Claremont, about the sudden appearance and evolution of super-powers on Earth in the years following World War II.
That sounds like a great idea. But I’ve no doubt that after the show is over, the creators will be too exhausted to do anything but count the mega-millions they’ve amassed from producing GoT.
On the other hand, how about a “Foundation” TV series?
Oh, I am sure those two guys will need a bit of downtime. Just asking conceptually.
Foundation would be wonderful.
Ooo, Zelazny mentioned - the Chronicles of Amber is also fun with big, multi-world politics and intrigue. There could be more time spent on Early and other shadow worlds.
Dark Tower (I know there is a movie coming out later this year, but I think a series like GoT would be better) and Wheel of Time. Or maybe scifi…perhaps Honor Harrington or something really grim like the Posleen Wars would be cool. The thing that GoT has shown (and the Harry Potter movies) is that there are audiences that are more than willing to watch a series of movies or TV series shows for multiple years, especially if you are even close to the gist of the original books. There are tons of really good series out there that could make great movie series or TV series if they would be faithful to the books. Dune? Wouldn’t be my first choice, though I loved the original book and even the next two books, but I’d watch it.
I would love to see *Dune *given a big budget treatment, but I’d also like to see something done with Fred Saberhagen’s, Berzerkers stories or the Horseclans series…
Y’know I never thought about this ( or I’ve forgotten if I have ), but that’s a great idea. I’d definitely be down with an HBO treatment of at least the first five books ( the original series ). Heck even the second set might potentially be improved by a translation to the small screen. I wonder who controls Zelazny’s estate?
Even though I hated the books, and didn’t manage to read them all the way through, I would watch their treatment of Thomas Covenant. I mean, I really despised the main character, but I imagine these guys could make it work.
Excellent idea. The biggest problem I see is that there was no ending or cohesive story arc. The show runners would have to use the stories as a base and focus the plot.
Ok sure GoT doesn’t have an ending yet either but it’s supposed to.
HBO supposedly wants more Thrones stuff after the series ends. I’m willing to bet they pitch Aegon conquest series or something more intimate and related like adapting Dunk and Egg.
