With GA leading the way, when are your local governments re-opening?
I’m on the KS/MO border, and it looks like the governors are going to let the stay at home orders expire May 1 (KS) or May 3 (MO).
Seems early, although they claim testing is ramping up. Kansas City order extends a bit further, which will be interesting as some of the counties it exists in will be lifting their orders at the same time as the state (if they had a separate one).
Assuming people actually start going out again, that is going to put pressure on the mayor to lift his also.
For the most part, the Bay Area remains closed. The general rule is you still can’t travel more than five miles from home for non-essential purposes.
An adjacent county is taking baby steps and will soon allow golf, so long as all players live in that county, twosomes only and no power carts. Seems appropriate - golf traditionally comes across as a privileged white Republican activity. How much longer before bowling alleys can re-open?
The “curve” has flattened sufficiently that area hospitals are now again able to schedule essential, non-cosmetic surgeries.
Michigan’s closed through April, but the governor mentioned in her briefing yesterday that we should expect a short extension into May, followed by a gradual re-opening (hopefully).
I’m not sure what Pennsylvania is going to do, but we discussed the situation last night and decided to continue to shelter-in-place until *we * decide it’s safe.
I mean, you can try to make this political if you want (seems to happen all the time), but golf seems like a pretty damn safe activity, especially when limiting it to no more than two people (who are still able to meet up outside of golfing, so…what changes?), and items are properly sanitized.
Or do I need to stop with my solo Pokémon GO walks because I might lean up against a tree that someone else might lean up against?
One thing I don’t understand is that there is all this talk of hair salons, massage parlors, gyms–places I think of as involving a lot of people in close physical contact, but as yet zero discussion of things like small personal gatherings in residences. Am I crazy? It seems like you’d start with opening up retail a little, opening up small gatherings (like cousins getting together) and see how that goes, first. Is it that politicians have no good explanation for why they aren’t all shaggy, and so need to get straight to hair cuts?
I also sorta think it’s because all the people who are applying pressure already ARE having cousins over and other small gatherings, so they are pressuring anyone, whereas those of us that are lawful good are stuck.
But they at least technically can’t meet up outside of golfing. At least in theory you aren’t supposed to be meeting friends for walks–though I see lots of people in my neighborhood who I suspect are walking with someone outside the family.
School is, of course, shut down in Illinois for the remainder of this school year. Support personnel, however, are being called back, and that means me. I’m in today for a while because of a few pressing issues, but I report back full time on Monday on my regular schedule.
This place has been empty for 5 weeks so, in reality, it’s pretty darn safe. It’s certainly safer than going to the store where there are any number of people that you don’t even know.
The Province of Ontario extended the state of emergency to early May; they have no official plan to loosen anything right now, but things are levelling off, so right now the smart money is that they’ll start easing restrictions around the Victoria Day holiday, which is May 18. They’re not gonna just throw everything open, though.
Because when hair salons, massage parlors, gyms re-open, people who are afraid to go back to work there won’t be eligible for unemployment benefits, whereas opening up small gatherings has no real economic benefit to the state.
Here in Colorado, some retail businesses can open up next week. Offices maybe around May 1, but restaurants and bars will still be shut down until at least mid-May. My owner said he would be fine until July, so at least I know I have a job to go back to.
Sacramento is about 60 miles west of me as the crow flies, a bit further if the crow has to walk and push a flat tire through the mountains. I expect Gov Newsom to cautiously advise counties and the state on when to loosen up. MrsRico will determine when our household relaxes. We’re not going for sit-down meals, theaters, bargain browsing, or body work anytime soon. The world can re-open however it wills; we will avoid upcoming recurrent infection spikes, thank you.
That makes sense. but if it gets to the point that it’s technically legal for me and my mom to get a pedicure together but not sit 10 ft apart at the park and talk, that’s weird.
Here in New Hampshire Gov. Sununu is supposed to announce tomorrow or early next week if he’s going to let the stay-at-home order expire or extend it. Most people feel that is will be extended. Children will not be returning to their schools until the fall.
Early May for Santa Clara County, California, is the current plan.
I was furloughed on March 17 and the last I heard, might be back on the job sometime in May. I had a lot of sick leave and vacation time saved up, and that was used to pay me for about three weeks. I filed for unemployment right away, but still haven’t seen anything like a debit card as promised. They got my name wrong on my online UI account, anyway, so I don’t know if the debit card will also be wrong and possibly unusable.
AFAICT, there hasn’t been any word yet about Oregon. The college where I teach informed us yesterday that the summer quarter is going to be taught remotely. But, unlike the current quarter, some programs (those that require hands-on experience, like aviation technology) will be allowed to have limited face-to-face meetings during the second half of the quarter, starting in July.
