A friend of mine who has a sweet tooth is in South Korea for the year, and I know from her blog that she’s dying for some candy from home that won’t cost her thousands of won.
It’s too hot here to expect candy to get there unmelted now, even if I threw in a couple of icepacks but it would probably be fine in the fall. Will it be hot still around Halloween where she is? (aproximately, I realize there are bound to be differences depending on which part of the country she’s in) I’d love to send a big box of candy for Halloween
As a bonus question: candy would get through customs, wouldn’t it? I know her mom sends her food, anyway.
Where is she shopping? I’m in Korea and it only costs me about 500 won (just about 50 cents) to buy a candy bar. The grocery stores here carry all kinds of chocolate, as do the bakeries. I’ve even bought Hershey’s without breaking the bank.
Oh, it’s incredibyly hot here in June, July, August, and September. October’s a bit better. After that, the cold starts to approach–and then surpass by many kilometers–bone deep chilling. So long as the chocolate’s wrapped up sufficiently, you could probably get away with sending it via air mail in late October (but see 2nd sentence after this one). FedEx would work too but would be expensive. The dangers to the chocolate for any method short of medical supplies ice box is that in transit the stuff very well may be exposed to heat and melt anyway.
Actually, sending it in a medical supplies ice box is a fairly easy thing for me to do - my mom gets medicine that way on a monthly basis, so those things pile up and I’m sure she’d be happy to get rid of one. The way the medicines are sealed in plastic, boxed, and then packed in plastic bag (apparently so the icepacks don’t damage the medicine if they somehow leak) makes me fairly certain it wouldn’t hurt sealed up chocolate either, so maybe this is the way to go.
Consider how much you’ll be paying for shipping stuff that’s not consumable (i.e., the stuff that’s not the chocolate: wrapping material, ice packs, etc.).
I also find the candy statement a little odd. If I had to take a guess, I would say that Willy Wonka actually lives somewhere in South Korea. But his name is really Lotte, not Willy. There is cheap candy everywhere. And icecream too. You can’t walk more than a few blocks without running into either. But maybe she just misses something specific from home?
But anyway. . . I just received a huge bag of Reeses Peanut Butter cups from home on my birthday. They were not packaged in anything special but showed no signs of melting or heat damage. Maybe it’s worth the risk if you want to send her something.
Where at in Korea is she? Do you know? Is she a soldier? Probably not, sense she could then get any American candybar she’s craving! As a matter of fact, if there is something specific, like a certain type of cany you are wanting to send her, let me know. I am positive I can get it at the Commissary at normal -or below - US prices. And then I could take it to her and say it’s a gift from YOU. Kinda like a CandyGram! But I AM NOT singing…
