[Moderator Request: since this involves the State of the Union address, I put it in Elections, but if it’s out of place, move it to MPSIMS]
In recent years, everybody seems to applaud when the First Lady shows up at the State of the Union address, even though she is not “officially” welcomed by the Speaker. When did this become a “thing”?
The earliest I can remember is, at one of GHWB’s addresses, when Barbara came in, some Republicans started chanting, “Barbara! Barbara! Barbara!”
