When did kids practice the Electric Slide?

This might date me, but I remember kids at Prom and dances just doing the Electric Slide in big groups. When did everyone get so skilled?

In my day we practiced The Hustle.

We did the loco motion. Did it nice and easy . . .

Come to think about we did the hokey pokey as well, and learned them at the skating rink.

I remember my friends and I learning the Electric Slide at some kid’s party. There really wasn’t a lot of skill involved.

I was in middle school from 1990-1992 and we learned it in gym class.

At any dance or wedding reception, there are like two people who actually know it, and everyone else is just watching them and faking it.

Everything I know about dance moves comes from the disco era and only because of PE. I get that dance is both good exercise and a way to work on coordination. But those weeks were always dreaded because who wants to dance to old disco tunes when you’re 13? This was the age of grunge and dancing was better captured by the goth kids in South Park: “The only COOL way to dance is to keep your hands at your sides at your eyes looking at the ground. Then every three seconds you take a drag on your cigarette.”

The only time we had to dance in PE was in Elementary School in the 60s (Square dancing to fight communism, and the hokey pokey) It’s bad enough in 5th grade. If they tried to make us do it in middle school, I probably would have rebelled.
