When did men and women start wearing underpants?

Just curious re history of undergaments and when people decided to stop going commando.

WAG here.

I would imagine that at the precise point when underpants were invented, that only one person decided to stop going commando.

I actually have a book on the history of underwear entitled, get this, “A Brief History of Underwear” and (here’s the best part) it’s a flap book–it has moving parts so’s you can lift the outer garments and see the undies. My kids love it.

Underwears, it states, began as the simple loin cloth. Some resembled a hankie on a string (like Tarzan’s) and others were more elaborate & looked like a diaper. Folks started wearing them, the book supposes, because our nether bits are tender, exposed and unretractable…so it was a comfort thing.

When all this luxury began I doubt anyone could prove. But ya gotta believe that for every caveman that thought, “Hey, if I wrap it up it won’t get snagged on the briars” there was another who just liked the feel of rabbit fur down there and found a way to have that fresh funny feeling all day long.

Or maybe it was a sanitary belt thing (looked at the postings in The Pit lately?)

It was five minutes after discovering the cactus.
