I was going to make the point in this thread that the CFL ball is bigger than the NFL ball, and so wouldn’t it be more difficult for a CFL kicker to match an NFL kicker for length.
At least, I thought the CFL ball was bigger. And their advertising (“Our balls are bigger”) would certainly reinforce that.
However, when I went looking for the actual specs on the respective balls, I found the following from this link and the CFL rulebook (all linear dimensions in inches):
length - CFL: 11-11 1/4; NFL: 11-11 1/4
long circumference - CFL: 27 3/4 - 28 1/4; NFL: 28 - 28 1/2
short circumference - CFL: 20 7/8 - 21 1/8; NFL: 21 1/4 - 21 1/2
weight - 14 to 15 oz; 14 to 15 oz
Those balls look pretty similar to me. Granted, I can’t find an authorative source on the size of the NFL ball (the NFL rules digest only says how many balls need to be on hand, not what size they are), but if the source is right, then things are pretty equal.
So has the CFL recently reduced the size of the ball? And if these have always been the dimensions of the CFL ball, where did we get the idea that there was a difference in size?
