Yep - Calgary Stampeders won the Grey Cup (that’s like the Superbowl, for all you yankies, not in the know).
Horray! 27 - 19. Check it out here.
I’m soo excited!

GO STAMPS!!!
I wonder how many nfl teams Calgary could beat? Detroit? Carolina?
Oh Jeez, I thought the Taliban had capitulated or something. Carry on.
If I recall correctly, back in the day there was a NFL vs. CFL match up type game played annually.
They used a blend of CFL/NFL rules. I seem to think that the CFL teams faired pretty well, actually.
The CFL field is bigger, which lends itself to more of a passing game, rather than a rushing game. Also, the players are generally smaller, which also lends itself more to passing than rushing. With fewer downs (3 rather than 4), passing is certainly a faster way to get the ball down the field.
I dunno - the NFL teams clearly have the size advantage, but I think the CFL players are used to making more yardage with less chances. It would be closer than you think.
-watched the start then the end of the game- I would have watched it all but I was sooo tired after camping that I needed a nap… unfortunately in the middle of the game…
Yes, congratulations Calgary; sympathies to Winnepeg. Another year, another championship coming down to the last play! And it looked like the Big O was rocking! It is almost enough to give you hope for the survival of the league.
alice, I don’t recall an CFL/NFL game, but I do recall something at the collegiate level - a team of CIAU allstars vs. something comparable from the US. Seems to me it was an experiment in the mid-70s, and I don’t think it lasted long. But I can’t find the cite!
Anyway, see you next year. Hopefully the Boatmen will figure out that they don’t have to wait until the game after the Labour Day classic to start winning!
AAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGOES!
We watched the game at Brewster’s in Eau Claire for my birthday/Grey Cup party yesterday - woohoo! We had a great time - our waiter was dressed up like a…a…red Stampeder/Canadian flag/cowboy guy. Yeah, that’s what he was! Did you catch that guy who did the half-time show? Frances D’Amour, or something? Good lord, what a scary-looking man. Just about put us off our beers!
I wish the Onion still had their story online “You Will Suffer Humiliation When The Sports Team From My Area Defeats The Sports Team From Your Area”.
Congratulations to your Stampeders! I really enjoyed watching CFL games when I lived in Baltimore and they had, for a short time, the “CFL Colts”. A fun game, not exactly the same as the NFL. But just as tough.
Did you get a chance to streak through the game, alice_in_wonderland?
Weeeel - the game was in Montreal, and I’m in Calgary, so not really.
I was streaking in spirit though!
It did my little heart good to see the Stamps win another Cup… I live in Edmonton but that doesn’t mean I HAVE to be an Eskimos fan.
I’m in southern Ontario, but having spent my childhood years in Calgary, I have a soft spot for the Stampeders. Good to see they won the Cup!
Featherlou, I’ve been to the Brewster’s in Eau Claire on visits to Calgary as an adult, and it always struck me as a great place to have a Grey Cup or Stanley Cup (should the Flames ever be contenders again) party. Unfortunately, I’ve never been there when a Calgary team is in any kind of final. But it sounds like you had a good time!
