When did Time Magazine start back with showing people smoking in print ads?

When did Time Magazine start back with showing people smoking in print ads? I was a little surprised by this pic, but maybe I’ve missed the other stuff. Is this a new policy or am I slow on the uptake re noticing this?

Here is pic of the ad in question.

Since we’re in MPSIMS, I can make a couple WAGs.

  1. They originally agreed to stop showing people smoking in ads. They did so.

  2. Camel premiered Joe Camel, who was not a people. They showed Joe smoking.

  3. That there’s a drawing, not a real person. They can show him smoking, too.

Hmm. This was supposed to go in GQ. I’ll ask a mod to delete this and repost there.

I thought my eyes were playing tricks.

It is; there’s an ] at the beginning of the thread title, though.

Why, is it offensive?

Technically, no, it’s not offensive, any more than showing people running around outside without sunblock on, but for a long time, it was either illegal or Just Not Done, like taking pictures of FDR climbing in and out of his wheelchair.
