When did US presidential candidates start making their tax returns public?

How long has this been going on? And even a decades worth? I can’t even remember hearing about this last election cycle which was pretty memorable.

Since 1967 when Mitt Romney’s father, George, ran for president.

His subsequent release of his federal tax returns – twelve years’ worth going back to his time as AMC head – was groundbreaking and established a precedent that many future presidential candidates would have to contend with.

That’s some high-grade irony there.

The best.

George Romney: One year could be a fluke, perhaps done for show, and what mattered in personal finance was how a man conducted himself over the long haul. The reporter T. George Harris characterized George Romney’s position that way.

George Romney earned $129,674 AGI in 1955 and paid $45,651 in federal income taxes.

An effective tax rate of 35.2 percent.

Sure, but that was when Communists were running the U.S. government. Thank God for Joe McCarthy!

HAH! Ok the thread was worth it just for that tidbit!
