when does age stop?

This is the first paragraph of my local papers top headline

"(these people) will face their first holiday season without their 22-year-old daughter, Laci, who was found strangled to death…

So when does she become 23

When do you stop counting?

My wife says you stay the age you were when you die.

I say that’s silly or I’m only 5 years younger than my Mom.

Thats creepy.

I say after you’re dead it should be would have been 23.

My uncle died this year at 30. He will be 30 forever. I’m only 5 years younger than him, so I don’t know how it will be when I am older. The fact that he was so close in age to me will always be at the forefront of my mind. In just 5 years I will have outlived him. How lucky am I.

Glad the first responder used to be from my neck of the woods. Westland

y mother died at age 53; my only sister died at age 47; (horrible consequences of Type I diabetes killed them both).

I’m 59. No diabetes. It should not be this way.

Don’t know about the age thing, but Atomic Mama has got to be the coolest new user name I’ve seen in, oh, whenevah!

Great choice, and a belated welcome to the SDMB.

Wordy and confusing. Why ask people to do the math? If you say she was 22 it’s clear she was killed at that age, and that’s easily understandable.

Your mom’s age doesn’t stay the same. You say she was [whatever age] or would be [whatever] or was born [blank] years ago. She doesn’t stay the same age while you get older.

Once a person dies they don’t age. It’s irritating when news people say so and so is this age today, like they kept on living.

I’d probably have written it as “first holiday without their daughter Laci, who was strangled to death at 22, last year.”

I heard talks about some kind of celebration for Abe Lincoln’s 200th birthday next year.

I agree with the other posts. Say “blah blah blah, who died X years ago at the age of Y,” or something to that effect. But she still could have been 22 had she lived, if this is their first Christmas without her.
