I used to think that prosecuted = executed. Signs that said “trespassers will be prosecuted” scared the crap out of me! What if they thought I trespassed when I didn’t?!?!
Similarly, my daughter when she was 6 had very clearly gotten the message that smoking was bad. However, she thought it was something that just randomly happened - you would be walking down the street, and smoke would come out of your mouth. She was petrified that she would just start smoking one day.
I thought passenger side mirrors, the ones with “objects are closer than they appear” etched on the bottom, were just mirrors that were made wrong, so they had to put a warning on them.
There were signs in my childhood. In church halls, an in wedding banquet halls, places my Dad’s company had their Christmas party that terrified me. This sign terrified me. In Ontario there were often lines on it about fixed seats, movable seats with areas set aside for dancing, and a whole bunch of other conditions. I was always afraid the police was going to come in, make us all number off, and people above the number would be asked to leave.
I was always trying to count the people, and make sure I wasn’t kicked out without my parents.
Also, I knew there were people who were Jewish, who didn’t celebrate Christmas. I knew there were other faiths too, who weren’t Christian, and didn’t celebrate Christmas. What I didn’t understand were my friends who didn’t go to any churches and still got to have Christmas trees, and presents, etc.
I had seen on PBS about the Mint. Dad went to work to make money, so I thought he worked at the mint.
