When is the last time you ate liver and onions?

30+ years eating vegetarian.

One of my favorite preps–and this is what I had a few weeks ago–are soul-food style smothered fried chicken livers. Lightly floured (or in this case, breaded and deep-fried) chicken livers with onions and gravy served over rice. Holy shit is that delicious. Very rich, and only need to have it a couple times a year, but so, so good.

I get a craving about once a year. I’ve always assumed it’s my body telling me I need iron. Beef liver is great if well done. Chicken livers are easier to get due to the convenience store down the road selling them deep fried every day. Onions, though, no way. Slimy fried onions remind me of earthworms.

I fibbed a little bit - my mom hates onions, so we had plenty of liver, but no liver and onions.

I haven’t had it since I was a kid. The smell, the texture, the taste…shudders…just vile.

Many, many years ago. Liver is far too powerful a taste for me when cooked that way. I’m fine with it in pate.

Within the past 24 months.

More than 10 years ago. Mum used to make it, but I’ve never cooked it myself. I have got it a few times in the cafeteria where I worked over 10 years ago though, when it was the meal of the day.

Why would anyone choose to eat the organ that filters all the crap out of the bloodstream? Crap your body doesn’t want. Dangerous crap.

“Yea, let’s give 'er another run through the system.”

Liver has to be cooked to just the right amount of done-ness. They are awful when overcooked, all dry, gray, and crumbly. But a gooey red bloody mess is just as awful, I simply can’t. I once tried a different recipe using chicken livers and mushrooms and stuff, to make a kind of stew, but the livers were so raw looking. Eww.

I think I have never had it.

I disagree with it smelling good though. One place I used to work had an employee cafeteria and our office was right next to the kitchen. About once a month they made liver and onions and the smell would make me so sick I’d turn green and start shaking. Once it was fully cooked I was okay, but while it was cooking it was all I could do to keep myself together.

I don’t think I ever have. I had a bite of liver once, as a kid, and hated it. Haven’t had it since.

When was the last time I ate liver and onions?

The first time I ate liver and onions.

I was given this dish as a child and didn’t care for it at all. I have never tried it again .

Big fan of liver and onions. Hardly ever get it, though, since I’m the only one in the house that likes it, and few restaurants around here serve it.

I can readily get fried chicken livers at a few nearby places, and I indulge every few months or so.

Back when I was in college, the university cafeteria served beef liver & onions maybe three times a month … and they did an unexpectedly good job with the liver.

I love the way it smells when it cooks, and…if only it tasted that good!

I don’t eat out much and eat out at places that sell L&O even less frequently, but whenever I’m somewhere that has it on the menu, I always get it. Yum yum yum yum yum.

'88 or '89 in the Dept. of Interior or IRS cafeteria.

As a child.
Never again.

As a child, so 40+ years ago. When my mother was pregnant with my youngest sibling, she craved it. Blech!

I love chicken livers, lightly fried with shallots and garlic, mushed up on toast. It’s just occurred to me that it has been far too long since I’ve done that.

This.
