I mean if the vote comes back tonight and Bush is ahead, should Gore concede then?
Or should he concede when all the absentee ballots are in and counted?
The reason I ask is for the sake of our country and constitution I think it is the right thing to do. While I am a Bush person , I still would like him to concede if the situation was reversed.
I am just kink of curious to see what ya’ll(demos) and repubs think?
No one should concede this race until all the votes have been counted. And I mean the Electoral College votes. There are still many ways this election can go, and Florida is not necessarily an important cog in it. We have to realize that we DO have an elected President in office until January 26. His name is Bill Clinton.
Everything I have seen of you here and elsewhere tells me that is a load of crap. You base your opinions EXACTLY to where your allegiences/biases lie, and when called on inconsistancies in this, you come off sounding like a hypocritical dufus.
*TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
Seven months, 17 hours, 47 minutes and 41 seconds.
8589 cigarettes not smoked, saving $1,073.91.
Extra time with Drain Bead: 4 weeks, 1 day, 19 hours, 45 minutes.
I said nothing at all regarding “trying”, nor did I say anything at all on “count”. The EC has been unpredictable at certain times in the past. There is no reason to assume that it will be rock steady in this election.
That is news to me. I know electors have chaged their votes in the past when they new it would not matter, but the idea of a candidate actively lobbying electors not to do their duty is unheard of.
To make sure first we are on the same page. I think Gore at the latest should concede after the absentee votes come in. Same for Bush btw. I do not think either should carry further on further ie bringing a lawsuit.
If you do not believe I feel this way about lawsuits, please review some of my past posts about lawyers and legal system in general.
The best way I describe a lawsuit between Bush and Gore is this lawyer joke. Lawyers are like atomic weapons everybodys got’em but when you use’em it _ _ _ _ _ (feel in the spaces with letters as you see fit) everything up.
I am serious after the recount it(this mess) should stop and somebody should concede even if it is Bush. I mean the principals of this country should be more important than this slice of history. If Gore does get in, hopefully he will not have enough time to screw up this country to bad with his four years. And hopefully at the end of his term, we will still have our guns amd cars for that matter.
But I am willing to take the fours years no matter who is elected. Afterall, I have taken 8 years of the last moron ya’ll put in there whats four more.
Whoa! Again, at what point did I give ANY indication that Gore should lobby for these votes? Please stop putting words into my mouth.
Wildest Bill: I completely agree that Gore should stop with the lawsuits immediately. Its dividing the country, and at the end of it, neither candidate is going to come out with very much support or trust. But I am firmly against a concession before the EC votes are out. Doing so would be irresponsible and reckless.
Why is there all this emphasis on how important it is for Gore to concede or not concede? Gore’s “concession” on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning had no legal meaning, and does not affect the outcome of the vote in any way. Neither will another concession by either candidate.
If one takes an extreme example of “concession,” say Reagan “conceded” to Mondale in '84 when Mondale only won two states. That wouldn’t have meant Mondale would have won, would it?
There was a strange UK example of this during the last general election in 1997. In an MP’s seat in Sussex, after the first count, the Conservative party candidate was ahead by two (yep, 2) votes. The Conservate was announced as the winner and was congratulated by his rivals, including the Liberal Democrat candidate on the wrong end of the two-vote margin–so the Lib Dem effectively “conceded” the vote. Next day, a recount was called in the constituency, only to find that the Liberal Democrat had actually won by 30 votes. Despite the Liberal Democrat’s “concession,” the Conservative was not returned to Parliament.
Bush or Gore should concede precisely to avoid a debacle in the Electoral College. Whichever one loses should stand up and say, “I lost, and I accept that. Should an elector jump ship and vote for me, I will not serve. And I fully recognize (Bush/Gore) as the legitimate president-elect of the United States, and will offer my full support to him.”
Anything less is going to doom the U.S. to four more years of the kind of political bickering that went on in the last 8, magnified about 100 times.
Actually, at some point, one of the candidates might decide it is in his own best interests to concede! I don’t envy either one of them getting into office, given that this election ain’t gonna confirm much legitimacy to whichever one ends up there.
I’m guessing that half the county is going to think whoever is president it illegitimate. I assume that it will go right down party lines. The only thing that can lessen this blow would be the leadership of the loser. He would need a powerful concession specch to calm his supporters.
Anything less and things will realy suck for the next 4 years.
It’s time for Al to have an informal press conference and say that he belives he’s lost and that all he’s going to do is hand check ballots in the disputed counties.
As for the spoiled votes in Palm Beach, there’s nothing he can do to fix it - except create a legal precedent that might one day work to upset a Democratic victory.
Then Al can quietly go away.
And new leadership in the Democratic party can start attacking this pea-brained spoiled brat whom fate has dumped on the American people.
Lest we forget, the Democratic party was formed by Andrew Jackson under just these circumstances in which Jackson won the popular vote but lost the election in the House.
Next time remember, go negative and go negative early and often. Shrub’s boozin and AWOL status should have been dicussed before the GOP convention.
Jon Stewart was funny this mornign on some show. He said Gore should be the president of the northerners and Bush of the southerners.
Makes about as much sense as a president(whichever one it is) being elected with less than 50%.
That’s the ticket. That wil do the country good.
It’s called the politics of personal destruction. Winning at any cost. The end justifies the means. Pleased to meet you…Won’t you guess my name???
