Sitting inside a Ruby Tuesdays tonight in Atlanta, GA I sneezed all over a Taiwaneze pilot whom, apparently makes a lot of trips between the states, including Alaska, Taiwan, and mainland China. I’ve been sick for about a week, this is how the pandemic starts, this is the way the world ends, this is the way the pandemic starts, not with a bang, but a sneeze all over an Asian guy’s face!!!
My grandfather was lucky to survive the flu pandemic of the early 20th century. He told me about being in Kansas City in 1918, seeing trainloads of sick soldiers coming into the train station. He said the hospitals ran out of rooms. The owner of the boarding house where he was living was caring for a sick relative. So the flu was all around him but he luckily never caught it.
I had an interesting conversation online with someone who stated that no one has ever died from the flu. I gently pointed him towards 1918. And then I not so gently told him that my otherwise very healthy cousin died last year from the flu.
