As I type this, they’re carrying Bush’s casket down the Capitol steps. It reminds me of an aunt’s funeral. As they were carrying her casket out of the church, another aunt walked by and muttered, ‘Please don’t drop her.’
It would be a shame if they dropped Trump’s casket, live on national (and world) TV.
A number of people have hit it exactly; tame platitudes or subtly snide compliments from those who can keep a straight face while bullshitting, or else a thunderous silence. Ramblin’ Ronnie Reagan and Maggie Thatcher both got a small and not very distinguished clique of mourners at their respective funerals; Maggie was one of the few to actually eulogize over Ronnie, AFAIK.
That’s just the official part. It could get more interesting at the popular level. I dunno what the Republicans would do, but with any luck we will see some highly creative and amusing ways to celebrate the passing of the First Coif by those who were less than enamored of him.
W, Bubba, Barrack, and Jimmy will solemnly place their bloodied daggers in Trump’s casket. Snap to attention, execute an about face, and hold their military salute to Mike Pence for rather too long to suggest respect. No confessions will be volunteered, no arrests made, and no charges pressed. The 3.5 years of Mike Pence’s presidency will pass without incident…apart from his sporadic bleating for restraint during the Russo-American war.
I was reading about “Crowds turn out in College Station for Bush casket’s arrival by train,” and wondering a couple of things. First, would crowds turn out to attend the arrival of the thump coffin on its way to the cemetery? I’m guessing yes, to pelt the coffin with eggs, rotten tomatoes, and chunks of cinder block. (When those things hit the coffin, they will make a sound: THUMP!)
Also, where IS the Trump family final resting place? Do they have a big plot somewhere. Maybe the Pres thinks he will be buried at Arlington? I don’t think so. That would kick up a massive protest among veterans and pretty much everyone else.
Trump is pretty well regarded by a lot of the veterans I know, although a handful of them (Vietnam vets) hate him with an unbridled passion, but he seems to have done pretty well among vets and active duty military people. As a former president, he will be eligible to be buried there, and while people may protest it, I cannot see the protests stopping it from happening.
