When Nixon passed, his family, probably wisely, chose to not have him lay in state at the Capitol, and rather had a more subdued memorial at his Presidential Library. He had reformed his image in many ways by that point, but still, his family was well aware of how divisive he remained and did not expose him to further potential public indignities.
After Trump dies, do you think he will lay in state in the Capitol rotunda? I suppose whether or not he is ever prosecuted and/or convicted of a crime will be a large factor. Is his family as prudent as Nixon’s was?
It would definitely not be a good idea if you ask me, but the Trump organization isn’t exactly known for making intelligent and wise decisions. Could Congress actually refuse to host his remains, to possibly avoid another riot?
George Bush Sr was the last former president to pass away and he lay in state for a couple of days in the Capitol Rotunda, but he was only the 12th to do so, so it’s not an automatic thing.
Plus putting Trump in the Capitol Rotunda would be a massive insult to those members of Congress whose lives he endangered on January 6. I’d half expect some of them to come by late at night and spit on him.
Depends on how soon it is, what relationship Eric and Don Jr. have with the US and US politics at the time, and whether they have the clout to override Melania. I highly doubt Melania will want the hassle of having Trump lay in state and, depending on the state of the Trump organization at the time, she might want to just take what cash she can and move back to Slovenia.
The family doesn’t give two hoots about ceremony or honor. They’ll probably freeze him solid, run him through a band saw, and sell the pieces for souvenirs.
Congressional approval seems to usually take the form of passing a resolution in the House or Senate to authorize use of the Rotunda.
Absent a full-on crazy-Republican takeover of government between now and Trump’s death, I concur that Congress will probably not be eager to invite such a shitshow.
In fear of veering a little off-topic, you’re assuming he’s going to die.
I don’t mean he’s immortal. I do mean that I suspect the rest of his family need him to live for as long as possible, even if that means past his natural death. His public appearances will… become very sparse, let’s say. They might get hold of that hologram tech. He will be the smarest hologram in the entire universe.
The family are as bad as Trump, himself, is. They’ll say that they want him to lay in state. Then some undefined thing will happen, and they’ll need donations from all the true patriots to take the fight to [insert delusion here].
Like Trump wouldn’t pay double to have Nancy pee on him!
(Fortunately she is too dignified to consider it- or to having his sorry carcass lying around the place.)
