Williams once appeared on the madcap television program “The Gong Show,” flashing his muscles amid scantily clad dancers, Mosely recalled.
Does anyone know when this was? What year it was, or anything like that?
I’ve seen 1976 claimed, but the source (which can’t be linked to here) seems to lack authority.
Otherwise, I haven’t a clue, other than the fact that it has to be between 1976 and 1980.
He was the only performer they ever had whose talent was shooting up while riding a unicycle and performing a mugging. He would have won, but when he tried to pistol whip Jamie Farr he got put into restraints by Jaye P. Morgan and Gene Gene the Dancing Machine.
I thought that he won when he wowed JP and Rip by keeping kids out of gangs before their very eyes, and showing his great modesty for being nominated for the Nobel and Pulitzer and a Tony etc…
I have a dim memory of a news story from many years ago involving a convicted felon who appeared in the background of one of the more chaotic acts on The Gong Show. Could’ve been Williams, but I seem to recall that it was someone who was a fugitive at the time.
I guess The Gong Show wasn’t too particular about who hung around the set.
