When was the last time you took an elevator?

I saw an elevator on TV last night and I was surprised to realize that in April it will have been four years since I last took an elevator. I’m just a simple country boy, and I don’t think I’ve even been in a building taller than 6 stories since 1997. In buildings that short, I just don’t bother with an elevator. I hate to wait for them, and I find I can get where I’m going faster by taking the stairs. (I climb stairs faster than most people, taking them two or three steps at a time.)

I took an elevator about two hours ago to get to my office at work. The stairwells here are very frightening!

I took one about an hour ago, and I’ll be taking it again once this message is posted. Its a whole one story down, but the stairs are on the other side of the building.

About two and a half hours ago, coming up to work.

This morning, leaving home and arriving at work. I live in a 5th-floor apartment and work in an 8th-floor office. I know it would be better for me to jog the stairs each time, but I’m lazy.

–sublight.

Coming downstairs in my apartment building every day. I walk up the stairs, since it’s only one flight. But it hurts going down, so I take the elevator. I’m not sure how many flights up I would be willing to walk on a regular basis. Probably not more than three, maybe less.

When I saw the question I thought “I take them all the time!” but now that I think about it, it’s been many months. I live in a city (Tokyo), but my office is a 3-story building without an elevator, and I live in a house. At stores I prefer the escalator - I’d rather take a slow mode of travel than stand there waiting for a faster one.

In fact, the last time was in October, when I went to a 12th floor restaurant.

This morning. I work on the second floor, but because of the dumb security I have to take an elevator. I feel like such a dope doing it to.

I work on the 11th floor. I took one up about 3 and half hours ago.

December 15, 2000 - 3 pm - Fashion Square Mall
(Flippin’ food court is on the 2nd Floor, and the escalator is on the opposite side of the atrium from where I was).
I normally don’t like elevators, but I was too tired to walk across the 2 acre area jammed with screaming kids and moms, so I rode the elevator jammed with screaming kids and moms.

Never, I always leave them right where I found them.

What? You knew somebody was going to say it!

About 2 hours ago, when I ran out to the Post Office.

Working on the 13th floor, it’s a necessity. And because of security concerns, you can’t take the stairs up. (Stairwell doors are locked from the inside on floors 2-15 because some exit into the middle of companies’ suites.)

Until I moved to the DC area, it was rare that I ever rode one. The tallest building in my hometown was 10 stories. Even the shopping mall was one level, so it didn’t even have escalators.

Early November in a hotel in Clearwater - we were on the 7th floor. I haven’t taken one regularly in longer than I can remember…

I work on the 64[sup]th[/sup] floor. I don’t even know where the stairs are.

34 minutes ago. I was carrying my lunch back to my room.

I tried to take an elevator once. I couldn’t get it out of the shaft, and that is probably a good thing, because, I am sure it would have been to big to fit in my truck anyways.

On Saturday at National Airport (which, incidentally, I REFUSE to call “Reagan Airport”). I only took it down one floor, but I had no choice because they’d seen fit to hide the baggage claim and make it accessible only by elevator.

I can see the elevator from my desk. In fact, I’m going to go over and ride down and back up right now just so I can say…

I took an elevator 15 seconds ago!

I went out to the pad at Kennedy Space Center to get a last look at Destiny, the US Lab module, before it launches next week to join the International Space Station. It’s a FAST elevator up to te 235’ level. If the pictures turn out OK I’ll post one on the people pages!

Every body please send good karma out for this launch, I’ve put 2 years into this, along with all the other professional dedicated people here.

GO ATLANTIS!

GO DESTINY!

later, Tom.
