When was the last time you were in a fight? Like actually pushing, hitting, kicking, biting, or in any way attempting to seriously damage another person.
For myself, I have not been in a fight in 30 years or so; the last time I was 16 or 17.
I have been the victim of violence on one occasion, but never participated. other than stupid stuff with my brothers when young, but I don’t consider that “physically violent,” at least not on my part.
Never. In my adult life I’ve only initiated two times that were even close: I slapped someone across the back of the head when he went to a NSFW website under my account, and I grabbed a very drunk woman by the wrist who was about to walk up to some stranger and see if they knew where to buy some substances, which couldn’t end well in any event.
In elementary school my best friend got mad at me and punched me in the stomach. Once. That’s the only fight I’ve ever gotten in. I did a couple years of karate but never sparred either. I’ve always wondered how I’d handle it if I ever had to get into a physical altercation with someone.
I think I got in one fight (not by choice) in High School, but only after being followed around the school being punched and kicked repeatedly.
I’ve thrown exactly two punches in my 32 years of adult life, a dozen or so years apart, both in self defense, and one of them didn’t connect. In four years of Security work, I laid hands on ONE person - to peel a drunk off someone elses back because he was choking him out from behind. In that case all I did was shove the guy out the door. I never hit him.
I’ve only ever been physically violent in self-defense. One was an attempted mugging (she had already knocked me to the ground from behind, and was still hitting my head, so I responded just to get her the hell off me) which was… more than 5 years ago, maybe 7ish? Another was an attempted sexual assault… let’s just say it did not go well for him, much to his surprise. That was… at least 8 or 9 years ago.
There was another attempted assault more recently – maybe 3 years? – but I don’t know if you want to count flailing in surprise (he also approached me from behind, at a friend’s party where I really didn’t expect such idiotic behavior) which led to the DSLR camera in my hand to whack him in the eye. He got hurt, but not on purpose (on my part, anyway).
The only time I have ever been physically violent against anyone was when I was a teenager. I was at the dentist (getting my wisdom teeth taken out), and he had given me a bit of anesthetic. Then he took a phone call! Time passed, I was a bit woozy, then a bit less so. He came back in and started to do something to my mouth that was the most excruciating pain I had ever felt! (I had not had my first bout with gout yet…)
My reaction was instinctive and immediate. My hands lunged for his arm and his throat. He was completely startled and taken aback by my reaction, and had that unmistakable “Oops!” expression on his face! He apologized and told me that he would start over with the anesthetic. I just glared at him, and waited for the woozy sensation to come back.
Let me think. I got into a shoving match with a homeless guy who was attacking a leashed dog outside a Walgreens. This was before I started in banking, so it must have been around 2001 or so.
I shoved a guy off a bus because he would not permit his wife/girlfriend and her baby to get on the bus to escape the beating he surely planned for her. That must have been 2000 or so.
I’ve never really been violent, besides little squabbles with my brothers - I’ve never actually attempted to injure another person, as far as I can say.
I was in Art School, and living in a rooming house. There were two of us who had adjacent rooms on the top floor. I was putting last-minute touches on my final art project, which was due the next day. It was sort of a geodesic dome, but much more intricate and delicate. Suddenly, my across-the-hall roomie came home, obviously stoned. He came into my room, picked up my project and deliberately smashed it. I picked the guy up and threw him down the stairs. Then I went down and threw him down another flight of stairs.
I collected what was left of my project and mounted it on a large board, including all the pieces, as if the thing had exploded. I got an A.
About an hour ago. My husband was punching walls—I hit him with a box of crackers. We’re in the process of losing everything. We don’t have anything left to fight but each other.
Not since I was in high school; 25+ years ago. I was attacked much more recently than that but it involved no violence on my part; I was too surprised to defend myself. Some guys just knocked me over out of the blue and started kicking me then ran off when someone started yelling at them; I never found out why.
