Fantasia’s box office was similarly helped by premium admission prices intended to pay for new technology theatre operators had to install for it. (Multichannel audio.)
My guess is by the end of the week Avatar will out-gross Titanic.
And it will continue to rake in the coin far and above.
Part of the reason is because it is mostly a hit in 3D format. Yes, some claim the 2D is good, but it is a lot harder to sell pirated versions of a film 95% of the people want to experience in 3D. For that reason alone, people will continue to fork over funds to see the movie in a theater and not be tempted to download and call it a day.
My guess is that Avatar runs in theaters at least another 2 months - easily allowing the grand total to surpass Titanic no matter how you spin the dollars today vs. dollars back then story.
You’re right about most of that, but Alice In Wonderland will take over many of the 3D screens, including IMAX screens, on March 5. Though, the Oscars are March 7, and Avatar will likely win several awards, including Best Picture, maybe, so theater owners are going to be in a quandary. Alice? Avatar? Theaters make very little money from but are pressured to show new releases, and they’re making LOTS of money from Avatar now. If Avatar doesn’t win BP, then it’ll probably be jettisoned from all but a few screens within the next week. If it does win, theater owners across the country will cheer and try to keep it a little while longer.
I haven’t seen the 2D format–many theatres around here seem to be showing it only in 3D. My ex-girlfriend and I wanted to see it in IMAX, but when I went to book the tickets on Friday night, all the IMAX showings were sold out until Monday! And they’re something like $17.50!
That seems pretty unlikely, unless you think Avatar can make 900 million dollars, which was Titanic’s inflation-adjusted, domestic gross. I haven’t seen numbers for inflation-adjusted worldwide grosses, which is perhaps unsurprising, considering the difficulty of determining inflation in each country.
In Zimbabwe the movie has earned eleven trillion.
I’m sure it is already past Titanic. Weekend box office figures only include Friday and Saturday. It’s 6PM Sunday and across the world you can rest assured it’s already made up that last $7 million.
Avatar will surpass Titanic Worldwide by tomorrow.
Domestically it’ll take another week or so.
pats Bryan on the head Who’s a good boy, you a good boy, yeah? Ooooh, such a good boy…fetch! throws a block of unobtanium
No, weekend estimates are extrapolated from Friday and Saturday numbers but include Sunday as well. Then a few days later you get the actuals from all three days.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, today’s the day Avatar tops Titanic.
Could we perhaps say that it sunk Titanic?
Too soon.
