It’s pretty clear from what I read everywhere that this will be the final season of Smallville, and that in the final episode (possibly the very last scene), Clark Kent will finally wear the famous Superman uniform.
Recent episodes and recent seasons – the whole series, actually – have been building up to that point in many different ways. In this thread I want to focus on one particular development which the producers are ignoring almost entirely, and that is the eyeglasses which Clark wears to make his appearance different from Superman’s.
In the comics, he always started wearing glasses long before adopting the Superman persona. And that is very logical, since beginning the glasses afterwards would make the disguise even more transparent. So when is he going to start wearing them already?
I recall one episode a few years ago where he did wear glasses, claiming some sort of vision problem, but that didn’t last past that one episode. How did they explain it away?
And just a few episodes ago, Lois travelled ten years into the future, where Superman was well-known, and Clark was wearing glasses, but Lois had to remind him to wear them, as if it was a recent decision.
Could it be that the glasses will not be seen again for the rest of the season? That when he becomes Superman, Clark will still not be wearing the glasses yet?
Or, can someone suggest a different Message Board where I should go with all this? Thanks!
In that episode you’re refering to, Clark traveled five years into the future. Future Clark was wearing glasses full time then. Future Lois had to keep reminding Present Clark to wear his glasses, since she thought he was Future Clark.
My current theory is that there will be some sort of global amnesia after Darkseid is defeted, and Clark will start wearing his glasses and Supes will put on his cape.
I never really got into Smallville – really, basically every time I tune in, it looks like little Lana Lang is about to burst into tears (but fights them back bravely) because young Clark Kent has to nobly sacrifice his true feelings for the greater good --, but I think it’d be awesome if they found a way out of that hokey old ‘nobody recognizes Clark because he wears glasses’ thing somehow. Though I confess I can’t really think of any way as to how this could be accomplished.
So why not go really old school? Bring back super-hypnotism, just as a callback (and to show that the show has at least some sense of self irony that isn’t totally overwhelmed by what seems to be Clark’s always-on power of super-seriousness)! Have him explain that he vibrates at high speed whenever his photo is taken, so he always looks out of focus! Fool somebody with super-ventriloquism!
Present Clark’s response when he see future Clark was priceless. Or actually the look on his face.
They won’t have to since he will not become Superman till the very end.
On the issue of glasses, it is possible for it to be an effective disguise if you have a good actor. Christopher Reeve and to a lesser extent Dean Cain and Brandon Routh played CK and Supes very differently.
Reeve especially made it very believable, he was like two different people. Remember that the audience/reader KNOWS that Clark=Superman. The inverse people don’t. Things are a lot more obvious when you know the fact beforehand.
I think they hinted at something like this. When Present Clark tried to go to his desk (without glasses), a couple of cub reporter approached him in awe, then stopped disappointed. “It’s only that from upstairs.”
They’ve already introduced a different phone booth running gag in Smallville. As the blur, Clark has arranged several times to call Lois Lane at some Metropolis phone booth or another to talk with her, (using a frequency shifter to disguise his real identity.)
