According to Electronics Boutiqe website I can get one with an extra controller and memory card for $369. Is this a good deal? How long does everyone think it will take before the price is reduced? Has it been long enough that the new PS 2’s will have some of the bugs worked out?
I put this here because I don’t think I can expect anything more than WAGs.
When they start making money of of PS2’s. Right now, Sony loses abou $100 on each one sold. Their only hope for profits are the games and other peripherals.
Until Sony can afford to lower the price, it’s going to remain $300. And if they can’t get the price down before the Gamecube or X-Box come out… they’re screwed.
My WAG is that the price of the PS2 will come down right before the XBox comes out. Sega did the same thing with the Dreamcast right before the PS2 release, IIRC. Of course, Sega’s situation was a little different than Sony’s. I’m not sure what Sony’s installed customer base is right now, but it’s got to be bigger than Sega’s was last year.
If the PS2 came down in price I would seriously consider buying one. The XBox has some pretty good specs compared to the PS2, though (not to mention the hype surrounding Halo), so I’m in the wait and see mode right now.
Guy at EB store told me a PSX2 alone was $350.00 Its right cheaper on the website, yes. No sales tax that way. They charged me $6.50 shipping & that was in Nov 2000. Course, they shipped each piece as it came in but no additional shipping charges.
I don’t see the price dropping for along time. The new versions have to be modified against being able to play backups, so they keep coming out with new versions, which costs them more money to make, see?
I think that if you are going to buy one before the price goes down, your best bet is BestBuy. Ours was 299. It’s hard to get them at BestBuy b/c they are so cheap, they go really fast. But I suggest you try there.
Pepper, $299 was the standard retail price when the PS2 was first released. I don’t know why Handy’s was more expensive… but the OP’s was costlier due to the extra controller/memory card.
No, mine was LESS. I paid $299 & $6.50 shipping. No sales tax…FFXI is going to be sent to me, no sales tax & no shipping cause I already paid shipping on that psx2. But shucks, I thought if FFX was nice FFXI must be better but they are coming out the same day & I haven’t a clue.
Well, I don’t have one yet. When are the X-Box and Game Cube coming out? How much are they expected to be? Once the new round of football games come out I don’t know if I’ll be able to restrain myself from getting a PS2 if the XBox/Game Cube aren’t out yet.
Handy, I meant the first one you saw, at the EB store. Do you know what it was that made it fifty bucks more? Or was it the same “extra controller and mem card” thing mentioned in the OP?
Dignan…
The Game Cube was scheduled to come out over the summer, but I think they might’ve delayed it. X-Box is slated to be released around Christmas time.
Well, Gamecube had a couple of setbacks, I heard (design changes, last-minute hardware upgrades). The X-box, though, has supposedly been proceeding excellently.

I haven’t been paying attention to the release dates, but I do know that FFX will be the standard Final Fantasy type game whereas FFXI is to be mulitplayer (not sure if there are single player options). It will be along the same lines as Phantasy Star Online and (blech) Everquest.
Regarding the Gamecube, it may not be produced. I haven’t checked the news lately, but I had read that if it doesn’t make a big showing at E3, they may skip producing it at all, and focus their hardware only on the Gameboy Advance.
I’d wait for the XBOX. It will draw in more designers for games. Sega, who is dumping Dreamcast, is jumping into game design for XBOX.
PlayStation 2 will probably drop off in price quietly after June. Sales will dip and Sony will have to head into the Christmas season with PS2 as the price bargain over XBOX.
XBOX will have a 6 gig drive and twice the processesing power of PS2.

I thought that was odd too. he did say something about an extended warrentee, but thats all. You’d get that if you bought with the right credit card anyway.
By the time the Xbox comes out there is going to be a better system on the horizon. Sure, it seems impressive now but when it comes out the new computer processor speeds are going to be so much faster than it & it’ll look like crap.
I have them all, N64, PSX2, Dreamcast, snes, genny, etc.
Why not?
Unfortunately, most of them are probably of the “Hey, we can port this old PC game to the XBox in a week and make some easy bucks!” school.
…and the PlayStation 2. More telling is the fact that Sega’s top-tier games are going to PS2, and not the XBox – at least, I haven’t heard of XBox versions of Crazy Taxi or Virtua Fighter yet.
…if you choose to believe Microsoft’s claims, anyway. And given their track record, I wouldn’t.
And, there is no way that Nintendo is not going to produce the Gamecube. That story is based on a bad translation of a statement by one of the Nintendo higher ups. He never said that they might cancel the console.
Gamecube is going to be a success. All the problems that the N64 had are gone in the new console. It has support from pretty much all the third parties. Add in the awesome first party titles such as Mario and Zelda that can almost carry the console by themselves and any arguments about the lack of games for the GC go right out the window.
