When You Get a Ticket and Your Insurance Goes Up, How Long Does it Stay Up?

The title pretty much says it all. But for those of you who insist on details:

I got a speeding ticket about 2 months ago. $75. Got my insurance renewal yesterday: an increase of $30 per month. Though I’m prepared to take my lumps and pay for it like a man, I’m curious to know: how long is this increase likely to last? Six months? A year? Five years? Forver ( )?

TIA

It probably varies by state.
In CA where I live, most tickets show up on your record 3 months after the fine is paid and stay on for 36 more for a total of 39 months.
Exceptions would be for reckless, drunk, other serious offences.
How long your insurance company surcharges you depends on company policies, their investment earnings, the competive market, and probably the phase of the moon.

It’s three years in Montana. I know from experience. I seem to rack one up about a month or so before the previous one falls off.

Unless of course you get picked up on the interstate or highway, providing you were within 10 miles of the posted speed limit and pay the fine on the spot, ($20.00) then it doesn’t go on your record or cost you points on your DL.

Yep, three years in Illinois - I speak from experience. I was told that my March 2000 ticket will leave my record in March and the accident I got in in June 2000 would also be gone soon. I can’t wait!

Rasta, what state do you live in? I have never heard of an increase in insurance after one ticket? Furthermore, if you pay the $75 for the ticket and still get an increase in your premiums, you must have more than one ticket on there. here in Ct you have three shots. after the third ticket the courts call the insurance company… This law was enacted because people were driving with no insurance due to it rising up so high after just one ticket…

I’ve had 23 tickets in my 32 years…Been to mandatory driver re-education 5 times… the last being 2 years ago… 2 years sober of speeding… Mrs.Phlosphr keeps me in line now… :frowning:

OOPS RASTA… appears you live in Illinois.

Still thats a tough law if you only had 1 ticket
