An NPR producer discusses her recent experience on the show: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/10/26/452006074/what-happens-when-your-jeopardy-response-goes-viral
So how was her experience?
I thought this was going to be about Ken Jennings’ response, “What is a hoe?”
This word for a gardening implement can also mean a person with loose morals. Correct response: What is a rake?
If Trebek didn’t make a terrible joke (NPR producers are for being liberal, not hating liberals), her response never would have gotten popular with online audiences.
Trebek is an enjoyable host, but some days I can’t wait for his retirement and the inevitable hiring of Ken Jennings.
You think so? I’m always puzzled at how bad he is at what’s gotta be one of the most cushy jobs in show business. He basically just has to fit in a suit, make small talk for 30 seconds and read copy*.
And yet, his small talk is always awkward, his few attempts at humour are worse and despite the fact that he barely has to say anything that isn’t written down, he still manages to comes across as kind of a dick.
*(granted, he’s also gotta pronounce the occasional foreign or difficult word, and he does pretty well at that, so I guess he isn’t totally terrible)
Trebek is enjoyable when he’s awkward. But when he’s just bad, like with his “liberal” gag, he’s the worst.
"Ye wouldn’a known that, Trebek, if ye hadn’a had that card in front o’ ye! THIS GUY READS FROM A CARD!
This story was interesting to me in that I learned that Alex Trebek can see the answers the contestants give for Final Jeopardy! before they’re revealed to the audience.
That answer and it’s disqualification always bothered me. If a nice Mormon boy’s mind first goes to “ho(e),” then an average person with a twisted mind will go there even faster, so such an ambiguous answer should be allowed. Not that it really hurt his chances in the long run.
I’ve never heard of a bleeding heart, either.
I also didn’t know bleeding heart was a flower, and would have gotten it wrong (would probably guess “pansy” as well) if it was just a text clue. But that picture - wow! It really looks like a bleeding heart. I like to think I would have figured that one out. Interesting in any case.
In that one, the actual clue was "This term for a long-handled gardening tool can also mean an immoral pleasure seeker.” Not, “a person with loose morals.” So is a hoe (ho) a pleasure seeker? It’s debatable, but since they ruled “mutt” was correct last night in a category when they were looking for 3-letter words, they are sometimes less strict with their ruling than I think they would be.
Supposedly they get more strict as the game goes on. So Alex will pause in the first round if a contestant gives a slightly wrong answer to give them a chance to correct themselves, or doesn’t use the form of a question, while in double jeopardy he’s less forgiving.
