It’s good for them. Builds character that they’re going to need when they have to go out in the pitch dark in -25C weather and have to scrape their car for 10 minutes then sit in a frigid car and drive to work.
By the time they grow up they won’t have cars. Everyone will have hovercrafts. Besides, no one will need to work. We’ll have robots for that.
There are some of us who like the dark, because the daylight is a terrible reminder of our long and ceaseless summer. I would give my right arm to stay on EST year round. It’ll be light today from about 6 to about 6:30, which makes me happy. If we were still on EDT, it’d be 7 to 7:30, which is extra hour of daylight I have to deal with in my day.
In the middle of summer, on the days I get off at 7:30p, it is still quite bright outside because it’s twilight til about 8:30, which I cannot abide. See, if we were on EST all the time, then I’d be walking out of work at about end of twilight time and I would be happier. As it stands, I have to wait for almost 9:00 for it to be dark dark.
Winter is my favorite time because of the time change and the temperatures. Don’t take away my dark.
Yeah and all those people suck. I’m with the OP. I like my later light.
You live in Florida and you are trying to sell us on the beauty of winter? That is cocaine you see, not snow.
It is pitch black when I leave work right at five now. Try to imagine that. In less than two months, it will get dark before 4 pm.
We need help!
I don’t give a damn when it’s dark or when it’s light. I just care about when I have to get up and go to work. I want people to stop futzing with my clocks.
I hates them.
I’ll take any system that doesn’t require changing all the clocks twice a year. DST, Standard, just pick one and stick with it.
It’s doing wonders for the French economy.
I’m at 55º37’ North.
Don’t come whining about darkness when you live @ 45N.
Summer time all year around. I don’t need this “get dark at 5 pm” crap. The problem with this whole thing is old people, though. They all vote, so they have a disproportionate amount of political power. And old people love to get up early. They all get up about five in the morning. They’re the ones causing us to have to set our clocks back in the fall.
Seriously, though, switching the clocks is a bizarre thing. We need to get rid of that crap.
More people are up around 5:00 PM than 7:00AM.
More people are adversely affected by the dark than the light.
I hate this standard time bullshit. We were doing perfectly fine before, why change things so that suddenly I am bussing home in the dark? Why change things so that your basic office worker doesn’t see the sun? Do kids even wait at bus stops alone nowdays? I know that letting your kid walk to school is considered tantamount to child abuse.
Dammit. Time is a human invention. It should be manipulated for the best human use. And putting it all the sunlight at seven AM- a time when only freaks and lunatics are awake- isn’t doing that.
I don’t care whether we’re on DST or ST, I just wish we wouldn’t have to switch our clocks all the time. Just pick one, and the very few people it actually matters for can just adjust their own damn schedules.
If it’s too dark for the kids to wait for the bus, then put a fucking street light on that corner or start school later in the winter. It’s not fucking hard.
Well, you’re probably right for your crazy high latitudes, but where I live the sun will not set before 5:35 EST this year, and of course there’s a period of twilight for about an hour after that is still usable – but, you have to remember that I dislike the sunlight, and I pay for it in summer time when it’s usably bright outside from just after 6a until about 9p EDT. This, I despise.
Maybe we should switch places.
I can’t tell if people in this thread are being serious or facetious. Of course, we get threads like this every six months, and I can never tell then, either.
Or why 9AM is different for six months of the year in, errrr, Saskatoon?
As far as I’m concerned, they should just can DST altogether and move Quebec into the Atlantic time zone.
I’m just speaking for myself but I like the shift back to Standard Time. Getting that hour back does a lot for me in terms of momentum. I’m also one of those odd people who doesn’t mind it getting dark earlier.
On the other hand, I hate it when we have to shift back to Daylight Savings Time. I’m just lagging for about a week after that happens.
I am completely with you. This is my favorite time of year and damnit, I’m tired of all the shit I get because of it! Yes, I LIKE the winter! Yes, I LOVE IT WHEN IT’S DARK AT 5:30 PM.! I love looking out the window at work and watching the light slowly dissapear as the clock creeps towards 5. I like it when it’s already light when I wake up in the morning at 6:30. I love it when you run inside to get out of the cold, not to escape the heat.
I know there are others like us out there. Comon’ people, who’s with me? WHO’S WITH ME??!!!
Me, sssorta, I guess. Although I must say I prefer biking home from work while it’s light out. But I also like watching that soft autumn sunset from the office window.
I agree with the OP.
I don’t mind so much getting up in the dark. I’m still half asleep anyway and busy getting ready for class, eating breakfast, showering, etc.
But getting home at 5 and it being dark is just frackin depressing. Go to class in darkness, get home in darkness.
It makes me feel like the days are a lot longer then they are(In a bad way).
