Where are they now Comic Strip characters MIA

Sometimes I lose track of comic strip characters and wonder if they were formally explained away.

  • Doonesbury had some bums that were dying. Did they?

  • Any other Doonesbury characters that haven’t been around last year?

  • Dennis the Menace’s Dad - is he still in the strip ever? I’ve seen the Mom. I’m not sure about Margarate and the other kids, but I only get them on Sunday, so I have to wonder.

  • Is Barney Google ever seen on his own strip or just Snuffy Smith?

  • Any others you wonder about?

The homeless woman died a couple of years ago, IIRC. I haven’t seen the guy in the strip for some time.
The elderly female senator (Lacey Davenport?) passed away awhile ago. I’m not sure about her admirer (did he have Alzheimer’s, or was he just absent-minded?).

Mostly when the scene is at the dinner table. But not too often lately.
Margaret and Joey are still around, Gina somewhat, but Tommy seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.

I always wondered why Barney was the title character, but Snuffy was in more panels. Haven’t seen Sparkplug in too many strips (but then again, I see it only sporadically on the internet comics sites).

Thelma’s mom and dad in “The Family Circus”.

As soon as I read the title of this thread I knew ol’ Barney would be mentioned.

Yes, occasionally he does show up with his beloved pack animal - typically on Sundays where the cartoonist has enough panels to explain what Barney’s doing in a strip that really isn’t about him any more.

I always wondered whatever happened to 5, the character in “Peanuts” who was renamed a number by his dad. It seems he was in a few introductory strips and then unceremoniously dropped.

Lyman. Jon’s friend in “Garfield.” Odie’s owner. Mysteriously disappeared in early 1980s, reappearing around 1983 and for Garfield’s 10th Birthday in 1988. The 20th anniversary collection of “Garfield” gives a humorous Top Ten list of what might have become of Lyman.

Lots of Peanuts characters vanished:

Shermy, Freida, Patty, Violet, Jose Pederson (sp?)…

Who roamed Charlie Brown’s outfield in the later years
(besides Lucy in right field) has been a source of hours of
wasted time for me…

I asked this question a couple weeks back, but got no answer:

Gary and Kevin from Robotman. Whatever happened to them?

And the cat who was there for a little while. Wasn’t his name Faron and didn’t he belong to Frieda? He wasn’t much of a character; Frieda only ever held him and wouldn’t let him down on the ground.

Needless to say, Snoopy was not impressed.

Yeah, named for Faron Young.

Later, he sort of morphed into the unseen cat-next-door,
World War II.

Dude, nobody wonders about Family Circus.

In Foxtrot, where’s Paige? She’s the blind girlfriend of the older brother, IIRC. Haven’t seen her for at least a year and a half, maybe longer?

Paige isn’t the girlfriend, she’s the SISTER, and she’s in there ALOT. The blind girlfriend shows up every now and then. (I think I last saw her a few weeks ago)

The Homeless Woman in Doonesbury (Alice) is still alive. She (who turned out to be Lacey Davenport’s twin sister) and her husband came into sudden money (inherited? lottery?) and were off the streets.

This has been bothering me. In the strip “Jumpstart”, I seem to remember that the pre-school kid named “Doctor”, that acts like a Doctor- was originally white- but now he is Black. WTF?

Not quite. Alice befriended Lacey while Lacey was in the advanced stages of Alzheimers. Lacey mistakenly believed that Alice was her sister Pearl. Alice played along and gave Lacey friendship and support through her illness; in thanks, Lacey left her estate to “Pearl”. That’s how Alice and Elmont (her husband) managed to buy an apartment and get off the streets.

Isn’t Peter’s girlfriend named Denise? I could be wrong, as I do not have my Foxtrot book here.

I miss Robotman. He went off on some alien ship a while ago and occasionally makes appearances or mentions, but when will he actually come back?

When he got taken away I thought about what Tom Tomorrow did with Sparky in “This Modern World” – took him out for a few months because the strip was relying on him too heavily. But it’s been a long, long time without Robotman.

I don’t know… they even had a bit where they traded places for a while. and they were drawn roughly the same. I think it may have been a case of something being left to the individual’s interpretation…

I read one time that Schulz wanted to introduce a cat into the strip and then once he did, quickly realized that he couldn’t really draw one and gave up on it.

Re: Foxtrot Paige IS the sister and Denise is the girlfriend and she was in a few strips recently.

Thanks for straightening out Paige/Denise… daaaah. I skim the comics.com site every blue moon, and got the 2 names mixed up at posting time.
