This post by Stranger On A Train prompted me to look up Yuri Andropov. He served as Premier of the USSR for such a short time I don’t remember much about him. Only that Samantha Smith wrote him a letter. I then had to look up Samantha Smith, just to find out when she died. (I knew she died in a plane crash, but I didn’t realise it was so long ago.) Which got me thinking about Matthias Rust, the German guy who landed a Cessna Skyhawk in Red Square. Whatever happened to him? Well, after serving part of his prison sentence in the Soviet Union (from Wiki):
[ul][li]While doing his obligatory community service (Zivildienst) in a West German hospital in 1989, Rust stabbed a female co-worker who had rejected him. The injuries were life-threatening and he was sentenced to four years in prison for attempted murder and was released after having served fifteen months.[/li][li]In 1996 he became engaged to a daughter of a rich Indian tea merchant and converted to Hinduism.[/li][li]In 2001 he was convicted for stealing a cashmere pullover and ordered to pay 10,000 Deutsche Mark; the sentence was later reduced to 600 Deutsche Mark. In 2005, he was convicted of fraud and had to pay €1,500 for stolen goods.[/li][li]As of 2009 Rust describes himself as a professional poker player.[/ul][/li]
Over to you.
OK, I’ll play. . .
In the early 1990s, Berkeley had a student known as “The Naked Guy” or “The Nude Guy.” Bascially, after leaving Berkeley, he went nuts, and in 2006 committed suicide.
I was reading about Monica Lewinsky today…apparently she got her Master’s in Psychology from the London School of Economics and is good friends with Alan Cumming.
I was reading about the movie “Howl” then read about Ginsburg, then Neal Cassady. A fascinating life.
How about “Alexis Reich”. Doesn’t ring a bell? Well… read this
Donald Turnupseed, the man who wrecked into James Dean, became a successful businessman until dying in 1995 from lung cancer. From all available sources, he never spoke about the accident. According to one article, his son gets occasional requests for interviews, and he has turned them down, saying “I wasn’t there, and Dad never talked about it.”
Holy crap. I lived in Tulare county. My wife used to teach at his rival high school. Who knew?
