I’ve been in South Africa for two months and am about to head home tomorrow, but I’m missing one important souvenir:
A cuddly dassie toy for my sister (she’d rather have a real one, but I wouldn’t inflict her on the dassie)
Does anyone know a shop in Johannesburg where I can get one??
(Dassies are another name rock hyraxes/rock rabbits. They look like large hamsters and are very common around Cape Town
I’ve spent a long time trying to track one down and have had no luck. Lions, elephants etc are easy, even wild dogs and antelopes, but noone has dassies.
I spoke to someone who should know and she said that a line of realistic cuddly toys including dassies was produced for two curio shops, Tiger’s Eye and Indaba Curios, but I can’t find them. I looked in Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square (and Google), and the Tiger’s Eye has closed and the Indaba is only a homewares branch)
