Where Did "!@#$%^&*()" arise from?

You know how “!@#$%^&*()” is often used to substitute in as profanity?

Where’d that get started? Probably in comics, I’m guessing.

And what’s the logic behind it? In other words, are specific symbols supposed to match up to certain profane terms?

And, frankly, why were they picked? Why would a star, a planet, an exclamation mark, or another kind of symbol somehow have an association with a profane term?

Yes, it did start in the comics. (In literature, the f**g cuss words were generally represented by the first c-****g letter and the last g-d letter with the middle letters replaced by fg asterisks.) (Sometimes only the vowels were asterisked.)

The symbols have no one-to-one correspondence to any specific cuss word (or sounds within cuss words).

This is just a WAG, but I would guess that the various symbols were picked to demonstrate, in a colorful way, that the cussing going on was truly violent in nature. The words were so “evil” that they did not even “look” like words.
