The idea may have been around before V. Look at the dragon symbology in Chinese cultures.
Also, it is not possible for different species to interbreed, not to mention a being cannot change its shape without some sort of damage to the physical. Someone correct me, i am no scientist, but I am sure of that much at least.
That said, its a fascinating book, read it on a stormy night for best effect.
For that matter, there are Greek lamia (half-woman half-snake in some interpretations) and Indian naga. Naga might be the closest to ‘lizard-men,’ but I’m not sure if they were really smart snakes or snake-ish humans. The Wikipedia article wasn’t really clear and my history books don’t mention them. (Very pretty artwork from the Mughal period, though. )
You can test for ghosts. Not all things in this world are relative. They dont exist. Theyre still wrong.
Jung and Cambell? Silverman? The old director of Esalen? Are you serious. So you list early 20th psychology and some of the biggest flakes in various fields to backup your ridiculous claims on mental illness?
Where are the modern studies by real medical journals?
Youre such an out of the mainstream flake its not even funny.
This is probably going to be better served in GD than GQ.

Sorry, this is nonsense, at least as far as Latin American culture in general goes. As someone who has lived in Latin America for almost 20 years, I can say that Latin Americans are no more likely to believe they have “seen” a loved one’s spirit than people are in other cultures. They may believe they are communicating with the deceased through prayer, but that is a common belief among religious people in general, not just Latin Americans.
Oh, and far as your comment about “religion is fake too” so schizophrenics believing fake things makes sense. No it doesnt. Schizophrenia is an illness. These people are in pain. My neighbor who believes in god doesnt have the suicide rate that a schizophrenic have, which is around 10%. Suicide rate in the west on average is somewhere around 1.5%. Yeah, this isnt a different mode of thinking or some other homeopathy hippie bullshit. Its pain and suffering.
Oh, they all smoke because nictone helps with the symptoms. So they seek out anything to help them, even if it kills them.
I know that the two men I described in my last post wanted, more than anything, to not be schizophrenic. You can argue, perhaps effectively, that the cure for schizophrenia is worse than the disease. But that’s entirely different than SmashTheState’s vacuous contention that it’s not a disease in the first place.
I thought it had something to do with people who have narrow eyes and blink fast or otherwise appear to have two sets of eyelids per eye, the argument being that they’re actually a different species. You can find videos all over Youtube.
Because he’s a reptilian like every other famous person and knows who they are.
Wait a sec… If every famous person is a reptilian… And Cecil Adams is famous…
OMG!!!
You’re totally going to get banned by TPTB. You know too much.
There is no ‘cure’ for schizophrenia, just a treatment that dulls the mind beyond just treating the schizophrenia.
Elizabeth R? I thought she was more the patriotic, self-sacrificing type.
I learned at least one thing from this thread. That the Reptilian Brain is something that is not considered to be a normal model. In my neurology class it was glossed over referring to those parts of the brain and saying, “That’s what people are referring to when they say the Reptilian Brain.”, describing lower brain-stem involuntary functionality that shows common structure with other creatures beyond just Mammals, thus the ‘Reptilian Brain’.
It’s not a ‘fringe’ theory as some people claim, and SmashtheState’s extrapolation has nothing to do with the overall theory. It’s an evolutionary theory, his opinions on schizophrenia are not addressed by the triune brain theory directly.
That being said, I have some sympathy for SmashtheState’s viewpoint on this. Schizophrenics represent a disproportionate subset of the creative potential of mankind. Schizophrenia is often accompanied by mathematical brilliance or brilliance in some art form. It’s that fine line between genius and madness. I won’t go so far as to dismiss the madness side of schizophrenia as he does.
Miller Your argument is one that holds up simple survival as the highest of ideals. Your anecdotes give us a window into those two individuals, and I know how damaging schizophrenia can be to those who have it and those around them, but that doesn’t mean that some shizophrenics don’t get something out of their lives as a result of their schizophrenia.
The movie Brazil is probably the most brilliant treatment of the schizophrenic dichotomy in the modern cultural lexicon. The non-schizophrenic world is a boring system of shifting paper around. The world of the schizophrenic is often a lot more colorful, but at the same time a whole lot less rational. It has been said by many schizophrenics and this is a point KGS made in his thread that there is an internal logic to the symbolic language of the schizophrenic. Unfortunately it is difficult to portray in a rational sense that most people understand. It leads many people to an unchosen solipsism that they have trouble escaping because others don’t understand.
In our culture today we have a great deal of contempt for the subjective life, despite the fact that most of life is lived subjectively, regardless of whether one is mad or not. All sensory input is subjective, it is only when it is interpreted rationally that we begin to see the contours of the objective world. The schizophrenic tends to interpret the real world as a manifestation of a symbolic and deeper underlying message, whereas the normal interpretation is that the outside world is ‘real’ and the interior world is simply a model of that outer ‘real’ world. It’s no wonder that these two different systems would be incompatible. It’s also no wonder that someone who doesn’t see objective reality outside of themselves as being ‘really real’ might engage in what they consider to be consequenceless adventurism like promiscuous sex and the belief one can fly.
The thing that most fascinates me about schizophrenia is something addressed by Daniel Dennett in his book, “Consciousness Explained.”, he claims that a truly persistent illusion is an impossibility for the brain to construct, and yet so much of our lay belief as to what is ‘crazy’ is based upon the idea that a persistant hallucination is a function of madness.
My father, aunt, first cousin, and two close friends were all schizophrenic, with varying degrees of severity. It was unquestionably a debilitating condition which was for the most part agonizing for them.
Without medication or other therapy, my father was virtually incapable of “functioning” at all. He was violent and hostile, sometimes physically assaulting other people. He was in mental agony almost constantly, obsessed with visions of the devil and of going to hell.
While never entirely well, he improved greatly when more effective medications were developed in the 1980s. He was unable to work, but at least was able to live at home without being confined.
More nonsense. “Most” anthropologist believe no such thing; this is at best a very marginal idea. I have met a number of shamans in the traditional cultures I have worked in; none of them appeared to be schizophrenic. In most traditional cultures, shamans and seers experience their visions through psychoactive drugs taken at specific times or via other kinds of regimes; they are not constantly having the hallucinations that schizophrenics do. Occasional schizophrenics may have been seen as visionaries, but this is far from the norm.
Is that a fact?
If “most anthropologists” think this, could you point us to a reference for this? I for one would be quite amazed to find that the world’s leading anthropologists were delving into making psychiatric diagnoses of long-dead people. But you seem pretty sure of yourself. So you should have no problem finding a cite.
Incidentally, your cites so far show no such thing.
Higher functioning at what? Please define your terms and provide evidence to support your claim.
Don’t tell me you’re disappointed in my materialist reply. You’ve made two claims of fact. Provide the evidence.
He also takes ideas from these groups. He has stated that a “secret Jewish clique” helped create the First and Second World Wars, the Russian Revolution and the state of Israel. This shadowy group also supposedly bankrolled and supported Hitler in his rise to power (go figure). From the Wikipedia article:
"Icke has cited white supremacist, neo-Nazi and other far-right publications in his books. British journalist Simon Jones notes that the bibliography of … And the Truth Shall Set You Free lists The Spotlight, formerly published by the now-defunct Liberty Lobby, and which Icke calls “excellent”, and On Target, published by the Australian League of Rights, which has organised speaking tours for Holocaust denier David Irving. Jones writes: “It’s tempting to dismiss David Icke as a confused and ignorant man, manipulated by extremists in order to present their philosophy in a socially acceptable format. But Icke clearly understands the implications of his words.”
Icke does exempt ordinary Jewish people from his accusations, though this is a common ploy among many anti-Semites. It’s the “secret cabal”, the “international bankers” or “Zionists” who are responsible for calamities and plotting to take over the world. Average Jews are OK (unless they fail to recognize and denounce the evil cabal(s)).
No shit, Sherlock.
No, quite the opposite. I’m arguing about quality of life. The manifestation of schizophrenia made the quality of life for both of these man immeasurably worse. This is not an external observation: this is how both men described their condition. That the available treatments were not able to restore that quality of life, that they may even have made it worse in some respects, does not change the damaging nature of the disease. It certainly does not redefine schizophrenia as something other than a disease, which is the argument SmashTheState made which I was specifically interested in rebutting.
Well the important thing about this is to remember that David Icke is full of shit.
It’s not Lizard Aliens that control the world for their nefarious schemes it’s Jews!
Truly, this is fanwankery of the first water. I applaud you.
