Where did this "Moon god" nonsense come from?

Every forum I’m reading these days, wherever Islam comes up, some fundy-tard throws out this crap that Allah is not the God of Abraham. Every Muslim that I’ve ever spoken to affirms that, yes, Allah is the Judeo-Christian God. End of story. I don’t see any idiots telling Jews and Christians that they’re not worshipping God, they’re worshipping an earthquake or volcano or something.

I know, I shouldn’t be reading the comments if it raises my blood pressure.

Claims that Muslims worship some god other than the Judeo-Christian god are very old. You’ll find that kind of thing in medieval European literature.

Some critics of Islam, especially fundamentalist Christian ones, claim that the name Allah derives from a pre-Muslim Arabic moon god. The crescent moon being used as a symbol of Islam and the Islamic lunar calendar are things that might be used to support this idea. The Koran clearly states that the moon is not a god.

You do see idiots claiming similarly untrue things about Catholics, like that they worship Mary or that they worship statues.

Holy shit. Here I am looking to dig up some early references to the “Allah=Moon God” batshittery, and it turns out the Holy Internet (PBUI) has given us an actual Wikipedia article about it. Damn, I love being alive right now.

Looks like it’s not that old an idea, as far as being a fundagelical cudgel goes.

More or less in the same way that the Romance languages words meaning God come from the name of a god of thunder and rapine (oh wait, that was just his hobby), yet I’m reasonably sure I don’t go to Mass to hear about golden showers.

If you want to troll Christians/Jews just tell them you’d rather skip the imitators and go with the original Mesopotamian tripartite sky god.

Some Jews may consider Christians to worship a man and not the real God, so not sure why you would not expect some Christians or Jews to likewise claim the Muslim God is not God. As for where the moon god came from IDK.

You can denigrate any religion by taking its beliefs out of context. Saying Muslims worship a meteorite is like saying Christians worship two pieces of wood that are nailed together.

The basics are that the Grand Mosque in Mecca was an established religious cite prior to Muhammad’s lifetime. It used to be a pagan temple with some form of moon god worship. So people that want to attack Islam claim that Muslims are worshiping in a temple dedicated to a moon god. But the old use of the site has nothing to do with its current use. There are plenty of Christian churches that were intentionally built on the sites of older pagan temples, including some that reuse the older buildings.

The other “fact” is that the word Allah means God. So a Muslim will call God Allah but will also use the word Allah when speaking of other gods. A Muslim would say, for example, that the ancient Greeks worshiped an allah named Zeus just as a Christian would say they worshiped a god named Zeus. But neither is acknowledging Zeus as a real divinity. The allah that Arab pagans worshiped before Muhammad’s lifetime has nothing to do with the Allah that Muslims worship now.

The first I heard of it was from Jack Chick but I don’t think it was his idea originally.

The Moon god idea isn’t. The idea that the god that Muslims worship isn’t the same as the Judeo-Christian god is much older. That’s found in the Song of Roland, from the 11th and 12th centuries.

Fundamentalist Christianity itself isn’t as old as some people think it is. It only dates back to the 19th century.

I wouldn’t be too surprised if there were Muslim batshittery claiming that Christians and/or Jews don’t worship the same god as Muslims. I would be kind of surprised to see much of it in English. Maybe you’re not seeing it because you don’t regularly read sites in Arabic.

Of course, Jews don’t believe that Jesus was God or connected to God in any way other than how every other human is. If we did believe that, we’d be Christians.

I like the moon.

I have a hard time undestanding this Allah and Muhammad stuff - could someone draw me a picture?

…but not as much as a spoon?

My daughter had a Poli Sci class this semester in which a woman threw tantrums, filed a complaint and eventually dropped the class because in relevant political discussions there were other students who would not drop the idea that Muslims know, respect and venerate Jesus.

Yeah, but when it hits your eye it’s a real bitch.

I thought it was amore.

I hear she is a harsh mistress.

M-O-O-N, that spells “Allah.”
