I did a search on this and only came up with this thread .
I am not a jewelry buyer, and don’t know much about it. This year, for Xmas I would like to get my g/f a necklass or something.
My SO is a college student, so despite the fact that I am making fabulous riches at my job ( ) I don’t want to spend too much and outspend her. Yes, we have talked about this and she agrees. Her idea actually. So, I am thinking 200-300 bucks or so for a silver necklass or bracelet.
Any dopers have any secrets to buying jewelry that I should know about? I don’t want to go to the mall and get snookered. I am also pretty sketched out about going to Ebay for something like this. Too easy to sell low quality items at high prices that way I would imagine.
Is there a particular chain of stores or web site that anybody can recommend for me?
Please help me get through the holiday season with a happy girlfriend and some money left in my bank account!
Nothing beats getting a little blue box! (Not that I would know, of course. You can feel free to send one my way, as well. ;))
For major discounts, go to the Jeweler’s building on Boylston Street. This is really the place to go to buy diamonds (hmmm…).
There’s the Jewelry Exchange in Sudbury, which has some good discounts. They’re on route 20 toward the Marlborough side.
Since you’re close to New Hampshire, you might want to check out Barmakian’s in Nashua. Their prices aren’t great, but at least there’s no sales tax so you’ll save at least 5%.
Hmmm…that link brings you to some rather expensive jewelry! Once you’re on the site, click search and put in your criteria (necklace, under $250. ) You’ll get more reasonable suggestions.
If you have a particular piece or designer in mind, it’s easy to find jewelry on line. I’m particular to John Atencio, myself, and lots of online vendors carry his stuff. I’ve had good luck at www.ashford.com.
Another good place is www.redenvelope.com. It’s generally name brand stuff, and there’s lots of necklaces and bracelets there in the $200-$300 range.
You can also try going to a jewelry show. The dealers usually have special show prices, and they’re more willing to haggle than the stores you find in the mall. My fiancee and I are going to this show next week. You can probably find something similar in your area.
Update: Jewerly exchange rocks! The prices are about half of the mall stores. But, this place is busy like I have never seen. The parking lot was so full that I had to park in the mall across the street. People were stuffed in there shoulder to shoulder.
Luckily for me, some couple was leaving as I came in. they looked like they would pass out soon. They gave me their number, so I only had to wait a half hour or so.
