Where do you fit within the bureaucracy of your company?

As a teacher, I’m about a half-step up the hierarchy from my students.

(Although often enough it feels like the other way around.)

Posted 5, but meant 4. Whoops.

Our corporation is STILL sorting out things from its merger back in 2005. So there’s still some silliness in the hierarchies.

Learned of one today - “Huh?! This PhD analytical chemist with like 15 years experience (5 years management) reports to this dude that is still learning our industry? How’d that happen?”

A: Corporation bureaucracy can get just silly.

It varies wildly. My corporate masters love to randomly (it seems) promote, demote, fire, hire, and transfer people. I, like most other people at XYZ, LLC, move up and down a lot in this ever expanding, contracting, frustratingly protean corporate “structure.” My boss just got fired and his position seems to have at least temporarily vanished, so in a way I guess I moved up . . . sort of. Next week I’ll probably run the entire show. The week after that I’ll be reporting to somebody who makes less money than I do and trying to hire somebody who will make more than me. It’s weird. I sometimes enjoy the confusing, chaotic drama . . . and then I realize that it’s not fiction and that I’m in the middle of it. I’m sort of looking around for a new job. Anyway, near as I can tell, I’m currently at 5.
