I’m confused…
If the Venetian Hotel sits on the site of the old Sands Hotel
and the Sands Hotel neighboured the Desert Inn Hotel (now the Wynn/Encore Hotel),
what used to sit between the two (on the site of the current Palazzo Hotel)? The Palazzo is the 11th largest building in the world (based on floor space), so it’s not an insignificant amount of space that I’m asking about.
Was the Palazzo’s current footprint merely the grounds of the Sands complex?
Also, being a Vegas fan and a history fan, is there any way of knowing exactly where the famous Sands sign was installed in relation to what’s there now? (the one that read “A Place In the Sun” and advertised the night’s performers).
IIRC, The Venetian stands on top of the old Sands. Palazzo sits on top of the Sands parking lot. Here’s a 1993 aerial shot that shows the Sands in the lower right corner (scroll down a little over halfway). That big green patch on the right side is the Desert Inn golf course (now Wynn Country Club). The road along the right side of the course is Sands. It curves to the north before intersecting Las Vegas Blvd. You can see how the Sands Hotel is a ways down the street from the intersection, and the area that is now Palazzo.
