My blog has been reprinted across thousands of webpages. The best way to get Chinese people to redistribute your stuff is to say they aren’t allowed to
I submitted a cartoon to my college newspaper back in the 80’s. They wouldn’t print it for copyright reasons (it was a parody Peanuts cartoon), but there was an underground paper on campus that ran it. Somehow, it got from there to an outfit called the New Liberation News Service, who printed it with a bunch of other stuff and sent it out to whoever they sent stuff out to. I was in there with the likes of Tom Toles, who I assume had given about as much permission as I had. By that time it was at least a third-generation copy.
I had a the idea a while ago to start a thread asking for people’s most exaggerated autobiographical blurbs that still have some thread of truth to them. By that standard, I am a nationally published cartoonist.
Not bad for a guy who can’t draw. It took me hours to get it to look right.
I have a couple of encyclopedia entries and some government reports.
I’ve published 5 non-fiction books (field guides, guide books, etc.). I get royalties on one (I didn’t get an advance before writing it), while I was paid up front to write (or illustrate) the others.
I’ve published several dozen articles in scientific journals, many of which have been cited. I’ve also written articles for magazines, newsletters, etc., some of which I was paid for.
I’ve done a number of Straight Dope Staff Reports, several of which were reprinted in a book about birding.
Academic publishing, including some articles, part of a book, conference collection, reviews, stuff like that.
I didn’t realise I could also tick off that my stuff has been cited by other people (in other academic books and articles, but I’ve been contacted a couple of times by newspaper journalists who wanted more information for a story they’re working on).! It’s been both startling and cool when that’s happened.
Yonks ago I submitted a fiction piece to a university literary magazine that the editor liked so much, she took off my name and claimed credit for it herself.* Her big thing (well, prior to that, as the ruckus I raised ended with her resigning and being disciplined) was being a big anti- plagarism advocate on campus. (at her, not you, Duke!)
*Since it was not a university I was affiliated with, or lived near, she thought I wouldn’t find out.
I already voted, but I forgot I wrote a book. It was for a non-profit so I didn’t get paid.
One kind of writing that I do that hasn’t been mentioned is exhibition writing, that is the in museum exhibits. It’s difficult in that you have to be both very concise (since nobody will read more than a couple of sentences while standing up) and reasonably interesting. I’ve written several exhibitions for the Smithsonian, and am currently in the final stages of producing a text for an entire museum (six galleries worth; two of the galleries have mostly audiovisual exhibits and don’t have text).
That’s appalling.
The one thing that was close to that was when I submitted a review to one magazine, which folded (temporarily). A year later, it was published in another magazine (for a nominal payment). And I had never submitted it to them.
I have no idea how it happened. I figured the editor of the first magazine sent it along, but he said no. I should ask the other editor how he got it.
I had an article reprinted under various names back in the 70s or 80s…I’m leaning towards the 80s. Some of the plagiarists went so far as to rearrange some of the paragraphs or insert their own writing, but I still burn when I think of it.
I think what annoyed me the most was that it wasn’t a student, but an adult staffer [whom I think was part of the part-time English faculty there, like a writing specialist to help students with their papers, in addition to acting as the faculty/staff editor of the magazine.]. I can’t recall all of the details as it was probably 15 years ago now.
On a more positive note – I’ve forgot how varied my publications have been (all boring academic stuff, I’m afraid); I’ve done editing work, but also written entries for music dictionaries and things. I have one coming out shortly which is an article that’s part of a four-volume work on various people, works, and genres in pop music within an historical and cultural context; I was really happy when they asked me to write one of the ‘big entries’ (the history of rock and roll entry) mostly so the next time I get a snarky student, I can say, ‘Why yes, I did write the book on it.’
I’ve also contributed essays to the EMI Archive’s blog Sound of the Hound, and have a few essays waiting to go to press for the Song Lexicon, an on-going project hosted by a German university which looks at popular songs of the 20th century.
My mother complained that I wasted so much time in high school listening to records in my room (‘It’s not as if Mick Jagger is paying your rent!’) , but I guess I can say it worked out all right as, in a way, Mick Jagger *does *pay my rent.
Writing’s my gig, so I’ve done quite a bit. I’ve written over 20 books, including self-published, small press, historical society, and very big press. In magazines, I’ve covered everything from Blacklisted 411 to The National Law Journal, Renaissance to Nuts & Volts, and The Journal of Court Reporting to Acres U.S.A.. I’ve also had articles published in two encyclopedias.
I assume in the poll that “paid in cash” includes checks. I don’t think I’ve ever actually gotten cash.

That’s a fantastic achievement.
I have actually been paid in cash for an article. An editor once sent me $25 in cash through the mail. I do online surveys here and there. One of them recently sent me six bucks in dollar bills and fifty cents in quarters.
I’ve had various articles printed in law journals, some case comments in law reporters, and a couple of articles in books. Have also written a hell of a lot of briefs, some of which have been adopted or followed by the court.
There wasn’t a category for newspaper articles, but I’ve worked as a reporter, freelancer, and TV writer for nearly 30 years now. Nothing I’ve written has really been national, apart from the odd story that the AP wire picked up, and the sister publcations of the business newspaper where I worked.
Right now I’m in marketing so the only thing I write that’s published is the member magazine for the public television network where I work. Oh and my blog. I do wish I had an editor for that!
“Fiction, poetry, and articles” would include newspaper articles.
I didn’t vote, but if you’re counting photographs, I’ve been published in probably most major newspapers, a number of magazines, and a few books, in addition to web content, and that sort of thing. And “yes” to reprints.
For writing, articles in a college newspaper, and a small business paper.
Ah. I misread; I thought it was fiction: poetry and articles .. though I’m not sure what I thought a fiction article would be. An article about fiction? Well, since I did book reviews at one time, I guess that would qualify.
When I was living in Berlin and teaching, I had plenty of extra time to submit proposals for articles. For a couple of years, I was earning on average $300-$1,000 month for articles and short stories in the most popular Gay magazines in the US at that time. Nice bump for my teacher’s income every month!
The best perk was that I got to cover the Berlin FilmFest and get press credentials for many years - got to meet many (now) famous actors and directors and interview them, plus got to see all of the films and review them. It was quite strenuous to actually go see 4 or more films in a day, every day, for two weeks - but great fun as well.
I also wrote some travel pieces with pictures I took and suggestions for hotels/clubs/bars and things to do. I even got some fan mail from those articles.
Oh, and yes - I got paid to write porn for one publisher of two monthly Gay magazines - and in one of them, I had a story in every single issue for an entire year! BTW, they paid the most of anyone and those monthly checks were great! The only reason I stopped writing for them is the editor changed and the new editor slashed the payment for articles by half, and was not a fun guy to work with.
The one thing people don’t realize is how much time and effort it takes to write articles for magazines - you need to know exactly what the editor is looking for, keep your words succinct, stick to their specific “formula” for content, and most importantly stick to deadlines!
I don’t know why photography wouldn’t count.
