Chinese President Jiang Zemin sent a message to U.S. President George W. Bush expressing shock at the attacks. He expressed sincere sympathy'' to Bush and said China
consistently condemns and opposes all manner of violence.’’
Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao told reporters that China supports the fight against international terrorism ‘‘including the prevention and combating of the financing of terrorist groups.’’
China is also ``taking measures’’ to prevent Osama bin Laden, the accused mastermind behind the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, from entering China, Zhu said.
``There is no way bin Laden can enter China,’’ he said.
While China has in the past had what it calls working level'' unofficial ties with the Taliban, it now has
no contact of any kind with the Taliban,’’ he said.
